Engineers and smart people! Statics question! Please help! Reps will be given!

Explain to me what a Couple is. And then explain to me what a Force Couple is. I'm completely lost and I need to understand this for future assignments. I've been trying to understand it for a while and nothing is working.

Is a couple just a moment?

I can't remember what the actual definition is, but just remember for statics, nothing is moving. All forces must be in equilibrium. [sum]Fx=0, [sum]Fy=0 and [sum]M=0. Use those 3 equations to find the rusultants And unknown forces.

I think thr couple is just 2 forces that are opposite but equal to each other

That's kind of what I was thinking, but either I'm getting different answers elsewhere or I'm just reading it wrong.

If that's what a couple is, then that's simple enough I suppose. But whats a force couple then?

A couple is made up of 2 forces of equal magnitude. (static equilibrium)

I believe the Force couple is when you take say Force1, Force2, and Force3 and determine the resultant force. That overall force is used to determine to the moment or torque. The only thing coming close in google is "force-couple system". I don't exactly remember the term "force-couple" when I had the class.

Maybe 8t6 can chime in or any other engineer/student

I believe a couple is 2 forces acting in opposite directions that cancel each other out.

Are they just looking for the moment of a point?

Check out problem 3.8 on page 19. Part a and b. I believe that is all they are wanting.

A couple is two forces that will result in no movement but create a moment.

Example: Do you know those tire irons that look like a cross of equal length? You put one side on the lug nuts and push down on one side while pulling up on the other. That is a force couple. You push down and pull up with equal force. Thus, there is no force down on the nut but it creates a moment to remove the nut.

You should be a professor Sonic, and I am not kidding. Although the pay probably sucks compared to the amount of schooling you would have to do additional to what you have.

Guys.. Wtf. A couple is either less than a few but more than one or.. It's a guy and a girl, in most cases, that fuck each other for enjoyment. A forced couple is the same thing but in the middle East

I'm not stuck on a particular problem. Just struggling with the concept which is making all the problems difficult.

That's one of the definitions I'm getting.

Kind of. I understand how to calculate moments, just not sure what relationship there is between a moment and a couple, or force couple if that's the technical term.

Crap. My mouse freaked out and clicked on "disapprove" when I rep'd you and I didn't catch it before I submitted it. Sorry! Is there anyway to change this?

I don't think I would be very good as a professor. I cannot deal with stupid kids doing stupid things. I don't mind helping people who are wanting to learn something, but that's it.

One of the red mods can probably change it. But it's not a big deal, not concerned about my reps.
