Sports Gambling

Anyone here participate? I just started this year. No, I don't mean Draft Kings or Fanduel. Just curious to see if anyone else does it and what their experiences are. I might throw my pick of the week into the thread each week. I bet NFL and occasional College FB.

I'm not betting big money, here. This is just for some lighthearted fun and to maybe make a little each week.

I use a legal online sportsbook.

Cheers

I did it a few times when I lived in Las Vegas but I never was big into gambling.

I bet but have a limited budget these days. About $50 a week. That kinda makes me play parlays so that I can win some loot. When I used to bet a couple hundred a week I did more straight bets or game bets. I do it for entertainment because I rarely make money on a season and when I do it is usually only a few hundred. I usually break about even. The last couple of seasons have been losers though.

The key to successful sports betting is to set your budget and stick to it. If you start chasing money with more it can lead to disaster. That is one reason as I don't have any of the sport book apps on my phone. I have to go I to the book to make my bets. The only time I set up an online account is if I'm gonna be out of town.

You will learn to not to try and buck certain trends. Betting too many road teams probably not a good idea. Betting the over with the favorite is usually a good play but I hate betting over unders in a game. Tough enough to pick the spread without having to figure the total. If I do bet totals I will never bet the under, usually. Just because your bet can be over at halftime and then the rest of the game sucks. And remember, if you can pick the winner of the game the spread is not usually a factor. I forgot the stat but a huge percentage of winners cover their respective spreads whether they were the favorite or the dog. If a dog covers and doesn't win it is usually on the road. Pay attention to trends. Careful of division games. Rival games tend to be volatile when it comes to trying to pick the winner. Can't think of a whole lot else to tell you.

Oh, my bet for this weekend is Giants -3.5 (already won) and Packers -6.5. I bet $40. Payout is $104 + my $40 back if Green Bay can cover a touchdown.

I have to use an online service through Canada, so some games are restricted (It's wonky, but most are available). I can choose a selection of props, too, which is fun.

My picks of the week are:

Giants (great minds thinks alike lol)
Colts -3.5 (no way they go 0-3 and lose to my Titans )
Seahawks -14.5
Pittsburgh -1.5

I'm only betting $15 per game, so my budget is about what yours is. I'm up so far this season. I usually only bet one or two games, but decided to break it up this week because of being unsure.

I wanted to pick the under on UK vs Mizzou in College FB, but my sportsbook only has NFL over unders, not college.

I was more thinking about betting against the Redskins on that one. And I Also didn't think that the Giants weren't gonna lose 3 in a row. They almost blew that game. A touchdown and 2 pt would have killed it as far as the spread goes.

Steelers had a good game last week but are on the road. Just not quite sold on them yet. I'm still leary about there defense. Did I say they were on the road?

Same with the Colts, they're on the road. And They are trending for disaster right now. They just look sloppy.

Seattle is definitely gonna win. No way they lose 3 in a row and they are back home for the first time this season. But 2 touchdowns plus the hook scares me. Think about it. It's 35 to 14 and Seattle lets Chicago score a meaningless touchdown at the end of the game so they can get the ball back and kneel on it. Just saying its a lot of Points in the NFL. They will probably win by 20+ points. I just tend to stay away from those kinda numbers.

The one road team that I liked was Buffulo in Miami but I didn't bet it because it was at -120.

The other game that I kinda liked was Detroit at home getting a field goal against the Broncos. That Denver offense just doesn't look right to me for some reason.

But what do I know. I think I picked 3 games right the whole weekend last.

There's only one way to find out

I totally get the points that you made. I've done pretty well so far this season, so I'm hoping that these picks don't make me look bad this week... I will say that I wasn't comfortable with any parlay bets this week. Even Tampa beat the Saints last week. The NFL has become more evenly spread this year.

I think I at least go an even 2-2 this week. I think the most I lose is the few bucks to the casino in a draw.
Considering I am 1-0 after last night, I think 1-2 is a reasonable expectation for the rest of the week

@07 Boss - any reason my casino would have the Jets/Eagle game locked? There's no major injuries that I can think of.

Don't know why that one is locked. Sometimes things go on the we do t know about until later. Maybe because it's a junk game, lol.

Yeah, and the Packer game and a couple of others isn't available. I can't figure out why, although I wasn't betting on it anyway. I think we need to put our picks in the thread each week. I was hoping that there would be a couple more people who bet on sports

---------- Post added at 10:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:42 AM ----------

I'm thinking about adding a cheap parlay on the Colts, Steelers and Falcons

I bet I'll consume more money in tasty fluids than you bet at a single game.

Jets are a 2 point favorite out here. Total is 45.5

I'm not sure how those online sites work but they can lock out a game if they see some unusual betting patterns. This is to protect themselves in case something screwy is going on.

Yeah, they show that line and info, but I can't bet.

I assume it's for some weird reason like that. It could be because they don't know if Murray is playing yet (or Chris Ivory).

I always tried to at least get some dos equis or something.

It was usually Coors light or PBR. I refuse to drink Natty.

You seem like you'd enjoy real betting. It's less luck-based. I do Fanduel as well, though.

I bet/gamble all the time on horses at the casino. Other than that, sports wise, I don't really bet.

I do go hard at the table games at the casino.

I've only bet on horses a couple of times and played slots. I've never gotten to play table games. They always intrigued me. I'm thoroughly enjoying the sports betting so far. It makes the games more exciting

I play slots out of boredom or the opportunity for a drink. I've played them at the car wash many a time and been pretty lucky. The grocery store too: I've gotten many a free basket of groceries. But I never go out to play slots and if I do end up playing slots I only play poker machines. I used to play black jack and the occasional craps but most places don't let me play cards anymore.

The only game that you can consistently win at is live poker, and that is if you get into a game big enough to beat the house rake. You may win at gambling in the short term, but in the end the math catches up with you. Trust me, I live in Sin City and also have a Hotel/Casino management degree. I know the house hold on most games and believe me, they aren't even close to being in your favor.

Take sports betting; you're losing 10% when you win a straight be against the spread. And money line bets there is a 25% to 40% spread on the payouts. Parlays are just as bad. On a 2 team parlay you are getting pain 2.6:1 on a 4:1 bet, they're holding like 40%. On a 3 teamer you are getting paid 6:1 on an 8:1 bet, and so on.

The only way to make money in the long run is, like I said, with poker. I play $1-$2 or $3-$5 no-limit hold 'em and average $30-$40 an hour. At least I used to when I played a lot. There was a time when they first banned smoking in the poker room that I used to get up and walk out to smoke, and I would throw some money in a poker machine. In a 32 day period I cashed out over $40K in jackpots. That is crazy lucky. I bought my wife a new car and paid cash ($38K out the door). All the thousands of dollars I've put into my car came off of the 25% of my poker winnings.

Sounds like you have the magic touch
I don't expect to make much money doing this, and if I start losing much, I'll quit. I know that it isn't in my favor, haha. I've hit nearly 150% of what I started with in the first two weeks, though, so maybe I'll stay lucky for a while.

I just added (30 mins ago) a 4-team College FB parlay and a single game bet, as well as the under on a game.

I'll reveal the results after. I didn't put much money into it, just wanted to make it interesting. I have more on the NFL games tomorrow.
