Co-workers surpise me sometimes :(

So I know a lot of ppl don't look down on dumpster diving but its something I don't think employees should be doing at their job.

I work as a Maintaince guy/grounds keep for a HUD apt complex for older ppl. well one of the residents had a sudden change in health so her family stuck her in a nursing home. she ended up passing at the nursing home. which legally that means her family had 2 weeks to get her stuff out of the apt. the family waited till they had 3 days left to move her stuff to even start. in the end they stuffed clothes, purses and hand bags, and electronics into bags and sat them on top of one our rolling dumpsters yesterday.

this morning, while im cleaning up the garage and putting up the extra Christmas stuff up in the bigger garage I store them in, I noticed that the 3 other maint guys and housekeeping lady were digging through the stuff. they didn't ask for permission or anything. they seen something sticking out they thought was nice and then they started digging deeper pulling out a barely used vacuum and a bag full of purses and hand bags that still had price tags on them. sorry but seeing my co-workers do this kinda annoys me cause yeah I think if somebody throws it away and its nice somebody that wants it could take it out the dumpster as long as its not covered in trash by that point..... but I also believe ppl that work at the place shouldn't be going through the dumpsters like that.

i see no problem with it as long as they're not on the clock.

but on the other hand, it would be a nice gesture for the nursing home to donate those items to people/families in need.

No fatstang...trust me I would of stupped down to the level of doing that on the clock like they were.

Plus I know my co-workers threw the stuff in their vehicles. It's not like we get shit pay to do this work so I don't see the need to dig like animals like they did.

haha, dig like animals? Just because you are not willing to go through a trash doesn't mean its wrong for other people to do it. Stop judging man.

What's wrong with going through trash? I've pulled out a TV or two from the dumpster that needed a simple power board. Fixed them and gave them to both my grandparents. If I see something I can fix or donate, I have no problem hopping in there and grabbing it.

And I drive a Lambo. Agree'd with Max - some people have no issues doing it. If it's being re-purposed, sold, donated who cares. If it's trash, it's trash.

Once something is put out with the trash it is considered public domain. Anyone can take it. If somebody has a use for it they should by all means take it and use it. Being on the clock may be a whole separate issue though. But as far as dumpster diving, we are an extremely wasteful society and more people should reuse/recycle products that still have life. Do you know we only consume like 20% of the food we produce? The rest is left to rot or just gets discarded. We could feed the worlds hungry with what we leave out in the fields to rot.

Anyways back on subject. I don't see anything wrong with it. Even if they take stuff to sell on ebay or whatever, it's going to get used which is better than letting it sit in some landfill somewhere.

I'm always digging through dumpsters for work. Just the other day I pulled out 2 different car subwoofers in a box. A single ported 10 inch as well as a dual ported 12 in with a 2300 watt amplifier. Going to sell those for cash. If it's in a dumpster, there's nothing wrong with Taking it.

When I worked at a manufacturing plant, I would dig through the trash everyday looking for 20oz pepsi product bottles with contests going on, so I could enter the codes underneath the caps. I probably got over $1000 in prizes by entering thousands of codes throughout the years.

Same thing at a store where lots of lottery tickets are scratched off, if you go behind people, sometimes they overlook a winning ticket, because they are not focusing on what they are doing or they are looking for a winning symbol instead of a number.

Here's an interesting twist.......

If something is in a dumpster that a company pays for..... Is it property of the waste removal company?

The place where I work throw out tons of stuff daily. They have a policy that no employees may take anything from the dumpster. They are afraid 2 people will team up, one throw it away, the other retrieves it from the dumpster.

As long as people aren't trespassing on someone's property, I see nothing wrong with it.

Nope, public domain. Whoever wants it can take possession of it and have it.

I've worked at restaurants where if there was misfired (a mistake or wrong dish) food, it had to be thrown away. Nobody was allowed to eat it. This was to prevent employees from making mistakes so they could eat on the company's dime.

When I worked front desk concierge/maintenance at a condominium complex, I used to take awesome shit from the trash all the time. Rich people throw out perfectly good shit - no reason to let it go to waste.

I don't remember signing any papers but I guess we had a policy change that they forgot about. Due to an exemployee taking a couch they were suppose to throw away we are no longer allowed to get stuff from dumpsters or if they have us throw it away.

When I worked apartment maintenance, people would just skip town, leave everything and get evicted. Depending on who it was, we would either throw it out or put some of it in storage units that we owned. I got lots of shit including a computer. One dude had trunks full of every Nascar race on vhs up to like 2006

We have big giant cardboard containers for Electronic waste at work..you're allowed to pick out stuff from it as long as you ask whoever is the boss of it. There's such random shit in there too lol..Microwaves, TVs(some working some not) old radios, cables upon cables, desk phones, a gamecube, etc.. I've never taken anything before lol..a guy was taking flat screens without telling anyone, so they made him bring all of them back and then fill out paperwork and then he could have them again.

Unless some type of grey area of a company code of conduct has been broken I see no issue.

I can see your side though in a "have some respect for the deceased" concept but trash is trash.
