Ok wraither... more help please

So, cranked the car up the other day, stereo turns on, then I get a constant sound from my subs like they are hitting a looooow note non stop.

I have not checked any wires yet. Might have time tomorrow. Any idea what in the world could be going on? None of the wires have been touched in months.

No, its a loud low note like is hitting a deep bass note on a CD. If I take the CD out it stops... stereo can still be on, just not playing anything, and it does not make the sound. If theres a CD in, regardless of vol, it makes the noise.

2 Kicker CVR 12"s, Alpine 1000watt Mono amp, 4 guage wire... nothing fancy.

+1, if it does it on everything then it will probably be a ground issue. if not then the there is a problem with the h/u with either the sub crossover or the rca connection (internally) and is trying to catch a ground from something else. you may be able to use a ground loop isolator to eliviate the problem if it still persists but first try checking the ground and re-doing it if necessary.

Checked the ground on the HU and the Amp and all seems just fine. I unwrapped all the connections that were covered with electrical tape and it all started working just fine... I went to reinstall and its back.

It does it on all input methods, but ONLY on the subs.

I guess the next step would be to replace the ground cable for the sub and re strip the one for the HU?

I also replaced the fuses on the amp and that did nothing. This HU is only about a year old.

sounds like you have a bad connection where you were moving something. do you have a different head unit you can put in to rule it out as wiring or head unit? or another car you can toss that HU into to check it?

No not really... no other HU, and I would have to buy another harness for the only other car I have access to.

Im gonna buy some new butt connectors and re strip/wire all the connections and make another ground on the amp... see if that does it. I might replace the RCAs as well as they are quite old.

try taking it back out and moving the wires around and see if it returns, that could help track down the prob. since you said when it was out it was fine and when you put it back in it came back, makes me think something is loose or broken

I would do a check on the rca's. easiest way to do it is to pull the deck back out and then take a set of new rca's and then run them over the seats to the amp and plug them in. this way you can rule them out without having to take anything out yet. where do you exactly do you have your ground for your amp at and is it the same guage as the power wire?

i think 1 of your rca or other wires might have a little bit of a cut that is near enough to something else to cause the noise but i want to rule out the head unit as having a problem since it is the easiest to move. replacing the old rca is not a bad idea.

i clicked on post with my last statement around 6p.m. went and ate. came back it was still working on posting.

wraith is right that u can check rca before just replacing them that way and it could rule them out as a problem.

Will have to do that... I think I got a pair of basic RCAs around here somewhere that used for a tv or something.

The ground is the same guage as the power, yes... 4guage. The ground is attached to the metal just behind the rear seat (where it starts to curve into the trunk). It has a completely flat contact and is attached with a self tapping screw. I tried moving it and it is still tight.

sounds like your ground is good for your amp. do the test that with the rca's and then see what the results are. honestly, for testing purposes, there is nothing wrong with using TV rca's but if you do end up having to replace them dont use them as they dont have the proper shielding that automotive rca's have and can possibly pick up more noises.

Oh, I was not planning on using them permantly... just for testing like you said.

Changed out the RCAs, Re-did the wires behind the Headunit, replaced the Turn on-Led.... worked.

Unpluged new RCAs, plugged in old RCAs, problem returns.

Unpluged old RCAs, plugged in new RCAs, Problem still there...

So I am currently at a loss. The Headunit has three RCA outputs. All three produce the problem. I am guessing its the Headunit or the Amp at this point. Both subs (even when hooked up one at a time) produce the problem so its not the Subs. The wires have all be checked... so I am going to try and get ahold of an amp and put it in to see if it fixes the issue.

Any other ideas?

sounds like you pretty much ruled everything out but im thinking that it is the radio that is giving you problems.

The headunit is maybe a year old at this point... so if it is the radio that makes me extreamly mad considering I paid a decent ammount of change for it.

The Amp is a 4 year old refurbished Alpine amp... so it seems more likely from that stand point. Gonna get another amp and test it tonight so we will know for sure tonight haha.

While I am researching... have any insight to this amp?
