I've seen N/A cars break the input shaft. It all depends on how you drive. Sooner or later it will go bye-bye (not necessarily the shaft, but the trans in general). I think around 500 to 600 or so HP is the breaking point. (might not break right away but its a matter of time)

Edit-Take this for what its worth, i'm not possitive on all of that. My car is a 5spd

I've haven't had any issues yet, I think about 500hp is their limit though. I have seen freaks like the cars ran by JDM or Livernois which basically still have stock trannies except for a torque converter swap pushing more then 500hp.

wanna say to the ground, but I may be wrong. I'm only pushing 440rwhp, but I haven't had any issues since I installed my blower. I'm running a 3000 stall converter too.

I plan to build my motor in about 7 months and upgrade my fuel system too. I'm gonna keep running my stock tranny until it breaks, may switch torque converters too. You should be fine as long as you don't abuse it too much or go over 500hp.

sweet vid. Brenspeed said the TCI trans is pretty good piece and I think either JDM or Livernois runs one too. I plan to get one if my stock piece breaks.

The reason I posted the Vid is because he (HotRodHarry) is on the stock converter and the stock trans still and he is running 10's.

Also, Nasty, wanna qualify that statement please? I hate it when people do that, "Oh that shit sucks don't get it" without a reason why or any examples of why not to get it.

I have heard nothing but good things about their transmission. I know their torque converters slip bad with decent power though. I plan to replace mine soon. Probably with a PI unit.

I hate when people post things as if that's the rule. "Hot Rod Harry" has a 10 second S197 with the stock transmission as if that's going to be the rule and it happens all of the time. No, not even close. I'm sick and don't really feel like I need to be doing the research for someone else about their purchase. If you want to see all of the TCI failures between their transmissions and especially their torque converters than search the main S197 forums and you'll find plenty of them breaking. I've seen input shafts, clutches, etc go in the TCI transmissions at power levels where they should of been perfectly fine. The TCI torque converters suck and slip once you start putting any kind of real use on them. If you want a nice torque converter than the PI is the way to go.

Like I said I posted that to show the CAPABILITIES, at least I tried. You just shot TCI down with NOTHING to qualify yourself. Was that so hard? 30 extra seconds to help someone out? If it was such a big deal why if comment on how TCI sucks or comment at all?

The fact that Harry has these results proves that the 5r55 CAN run 10's at 500+HP on the stock setup with the stock covnerter . I agree that its not the rule, but that wasn't said nor implied.

I can attest to TCI's lack of quality. In the past I have burned through a few torque convertors. They seem to be OK for stock replacement or mild power with bolt ons. But every time I've run a car with any kind of power 400hp+, they seem to not be able to handle it. They tell me they are good up to 600 hp and they won't hold 400. So in looking at there tranny that says it will hold up to 750 hp I wouldn't trust it past 500 hp. I don't think it would be much stronger than the stock. I wouldn't buy anything TCI when it comes to drivetrain componenets where a failure is catastrophic. The only TCI piece that I own is a shifter, and only because they are the only ones to make one for our autos. I was waiting for B&M to come out with their shifter but theirs never got put into production.

By the way, PI triple disc torque convertor here.

To the OP...what plans do you have for the car...do you want to dragstrip race a lot and get consistent mid 10s all day long? Lot of folk in the mid to low 10s and faster use a 4r70w.

We sold our recently to 05GT_KBcharged who posts on this forum. He dropped an insane 1.5 seconds on his first try with the 4r (11.8 to 10.3 in the 1/4)

2006 mustang GT,10.0 at 136mph, 1/4 (sold 2010)

Previously owned 2002 viper gts, 2006 viper coupe,
2013 SRT viper base (track package).

S550 mercedes, stock, daily driver. Finally something I can climb in and out without hurting myself

Wow... I remember he posting something about it but I don't remember it being that dramatic. I love his PD setup. If I had a PD blower I would try to mimic his setup as close as possible.

Yep...and that was launching off idle (had wrong tires), not using transbrake, on a 18 lbs boost, pump gas tune. Think he got to 137 mph that night...think he also shredded his trutrac???

He went from a high 11s car to a potential 9s second one in one evening. Now he has to get a cage (not rollbar).
