Need help diagnosing a serious electrical problem

I have a pretty serious electrical problem. Tonight while I was driving home, my radar detector shut down, then my radio shut down. My display in my gauge panel started giving me error messages for the traction control, fuel level low, etc... Next the headlights shut off. I switched on my hazards and made it home. The only electrical that was working was the gauge cluster and the hazards. As I was pulling in, even that started shutting down. The engine was sputtering a little, but ran alright for the most part.

In the gauge cluster, the electrical gauge (volt meter?) was glowing red and the needle was straight on the "L".

Is this an easy one, my alternator went bad, or is there something serious happening?

Everything looks good under the hood. No burnt wires, nothing severed or whatever. Belt looks good. Temperature was good. Don't know what the hell is going on. I had just bought a new battery, yellow top optima, last month.

All help is appreciated.

Nothing takes ten minutes for me. I know it's pretty easy though. I don't know how hard it is with my blower and all. I forget if anything is in the way. I don't think so though.

Yep. I've had 3 alternators go out and each time the car did the same as yours. Yeah, I kinda dread when I have to replace mine again with all the shit that's in the way now.

Mine acted like a crazed rabid gorilla just the same when the alternator shit the bed.

Replace alternator, no more crazy gorilla issue(s).

Oh and fyi for those reading this thread sometime in the future,

because of all the electronic engine management paraphenelia and brouhaha on these cars, when your alternator starts giving up the ghost, your car will sooner or later stumble and fall on it's face like a drunken AnotherS197GT wearing roller skates on an ice rink. Might trick you into thinking it's a bad injector or something... but if your voltage drops low enough... it will stumble and eventually shut right down. My service manager told me the actual voltage number where it starts to act up; I can't remember it for the life of me.
