Biggest tire size for 17x8?

What's the biggest tire size that I can run on my 17x8 Cobra rims for the rear that will keep the same diameter?

265/40/17?
275/35/17?

No, 245 is the largest recommended tire and also the safest. A 17x9 is needed for a 275.

I thought the smallest cobra wheels were 17x9 anyway.

No it is not. There are a lot of people that run 275s on the stock cobra rims. Google search it. I ran a 275/40 on 99 cobra rims for 2 years dd no issues good traction

You may be able to fit 275s, but it isn't a smart thing to do.

275s on an 8" wheel is fking retarded. If you want to run a 275, go buy a 9".

You probably wasted more time typing all of those links than you would have spent just answering the question. If that's all of the input you had to give why even bother.

For all of those people willing to provide an answer, thank you guys and gals, I appreciate it.

Seriously? Less than ten seconds using the search function turned up all of those threads and more. This question comes up at least once a week. If you looked at ANY of those threads, you'd see that I've provided an answer to this question over and over again. Some of us are tired of seeing the pot stirred, as this is obviously a topic that stirs up drama.

I didn't say it would not fit, I said it's not recommended or safe. I don't give a shit if other people run a 275 on a 8" wheel. It's not the right size tire and I will not tell somebody it's ok to put the wrong size tire on their wheel. It's stupid, just get a 9" wheel...

That's why you have neg feedback.

I've been around mustangs for 7 years now and I've seen plenty of 275s on 8inch rims you should get your facts straight before you open your mouth, I can see you've never seen anyone run them because if you had you would see no problem with it. It bulges no more then a slick on a 15 inch rim

It is perfectly safe to run them.

A slick on a 15" wheel is designed to go straight and nothing else. There is never a extreme amount of side to side force on the side walls.

All I'm saying is, a 275/45-17 isn't made for a 17x8" wheel, it's made for a 9" wheel. Hell, you could probably get a 315 on a 17x8 if you really wanted to...

Thanks for the input, the car won't be driven at the track or anything, I would just like a fatter rear tire while I decide on what wheels to get. I don't like spinning when taking off, especially when it's pretty much stock.

What tires do you have on there now and what sort of shape are they in?
