maxgst Florida is the go-to state for anything car related. No one gives a shit about what you do to your car here.

SlowSix As lefty said, PA basically gives you a big middle finger about tint.
I'm on the western side, and typically cops won't pull you over for just tint.
They definitely can give you a ticket if they pull you over for other reasons though.

I'm lucky I guess, but I've been pulled over 3 times in a car with tinted windows (20%) and never had the officer say anything. Twice by a local cop and once by a state trooper. I do usually, as a courtesy, roll all the windows down if I get pulled over though.

I will say I had a friend get pulled and they told him to take it off, but this was when we were in high school, and he was driving a shitty Camry with double 5% on the back windows and doors.

My car is originally from Jersey and that's how I could tell- the quarter windows and rear glass have 20% on them but there's no tint anywhere else.

Years ago when I bought my Turbo Coupe it had 20% on the side windows (somebody had already pulled it off the rear glass, I guess it bubbled), I loved it and thought it was perfect. The FIRST f'ing time I took it to get it inspected, to a guy who had formerly passed anything that rolled into his shop, he put a tint tester on it and told me I had to take it off. I never did get it retinted either.

But we just got 20% done on the front windows of my wife's Explorer and I'm really liking it, so it's got me thinking about it again.

Also I never realized PA was that strict! And I see tons of people with blacked out windows every time I go to Pittsburgh, so that's interesting...

Lefty Here's the deal with tint in PA. As I've brought this up to my lawyers as well as a few officers who are family friends.

The law is 70% period. If you have a medical "prescription" or note from the doctor (like I do) stating you need to block the brightness of the sun here and there with driving for xxxxx cause (mine is terrible migraines), it's all irrelevant. PA basically says Fuck You, regardless of your medical condition. Which is bullshit.

You can take it to court and fight it, but it won't go anywhere. PA's rebuttal to it is, "well if you need to block the sun, we have a special 'tintless tint'". WTF is tintless tint? There is none. They basically state it as a clear film that blocks the UV rays but doesn't darken the window. That's what they've told me is the only thing I can use.

Listen you fuckers (pardon the french) - my issue isn't with the UV rays, it's the brightness. They don't care. If it's less than 70%, regardless of condition, it's illegal.

So basically in PA, you can pretty much saran wrap your car windows and that's about it.

As for officer's input on this...98% of the officers in Central, PA won't specifically pull you over for tint. They'll pull you over for speeding, then hit you with a tint citation on top of that if you have it. There's two townships around me (Upper Allen & Hampden) that WILL pull you over for tint because they literally have nothing else going on in their department so they just run traffic violation/citations all day; everyday.

SlowSix PA inspection law doesn't say anything about tint, luckily. You can't fail state inspection for tint, it is a law enforcement issue.
March 27th, 2016 10:49 AM
HighDensity No tint no worries. My mustang has never had tint, staying that way. Previous cars had dark tint and I'd get pulled over all the time. Debating removing it from the Dodge as I roll around with windows down.

Sixpointslow It's 70% in Delaware, which is bullshit. 5% FTW.

My state doesn't do inspections, so at least I have that going for me.

May as well not even have it. I know when my mom moved back to Pittsburgh,PA from Houston, TX a few years ago with her Texas tinted car, she got pulled over by an officer who hassled her about the tint. He underestimated the ire of my mother, and let her go with a warning.

PA does suck. I will say I haven't had any issues with tint though.
Both my cars have 20% all around and I've been pulled over in both of them. No one has ever said anything about it.

ghunt I like tint. My state law says 35% max, which sucks because 20% looks and works the best, hell I see people with limo tint here and current inspections and I'd like to know how they get away with it.

I want to tint my windows but I'm afraid of the tint getting scratched...heard it's a problem on the older S197's, I put moleskin on my inner weatherstrip but I noticed there's a big plastic block down inside the door that holds the glass and I have to wonder if that would scratch it as well, I know it leaves streaks on the glass as it is.

The kid who I bought my explorer from did 15% over 15% and it is way too dark, I'm always afraid of getting pulled over and reversing in the dark is awful.
Bumping this thread because i tinted a fiesta ST and it has a spoiler over the rear window as shown. I have yet to do one of these, but I did this one in about 20 minutes total, start to finish. Had to shrink the bottom before the top, and barely shrunk the top. Did the final shrinking inside the window.

Also retinted my truck, went with 20% film on the sides and a dark metering 25% on the windshield.. It looks uniform and very good. Also got LED headlights:

I've got some frosted tint on my front door side windows. Probably going to do tint on the windows on one side of the house.

Exactly. This is why I'll always roll them down, hands on the wheel. Anything to make the LEO more comfortable. Makes both of our days easier.
