That's somewhat reassuring. At least Mattis is an adult and well qualified to lead if military force is the decision. While I would like a more involved commander in chief, at least Mattis can be decisive in a thoughtful way.

Not a dig, just a fact. He did everything possible to stay of of the draft and the military. Including volunteering for ROTC to get his draft classification changed then later changed his mind and didn't go.

That seems strangely familiar.

A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they seized him. But he pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked. (Mark 14:51-52)

Yes. We have discussed Trump's deferment before. The point is that Trump is not the first president, nor will he be the last, that knows very little about the military and specific military capabilities. That is why military advisors are so important.

Naaaah, we don't need them.

I'm still curious as to why two wrongs make a right. Yes Clinton got a deferment under suspect conditions. That was wrong. Why does that make it ok for Trump also? Just because Clinton did it doesn't give carte blanche to everyone else that follows. This is a perfect example of partisanship and how it has poisoned our government. One side does something shady so the other side feels that it gives them license to continue the behavior because, hey, they did it so we get to do it now.

Just like when the Democrats in the Senate invoked the nuclear option. They opened a pandoras box that ultimately will kill the one thing that keeps the majority from rolling over the minority in the Senate. Now Republicans want to act exactly like them and continue the wrong headed direction Democrats invoked.

It isn't and no one said it was. The discussion was Trump's lack of knowledge of military weaponry. All I said was that there were a lot of presidents who lacked military knowledge.

My opinion of the draft dodgers are that they were cowards. I actually had someone tell me that he would have served if called (drafted) as if that gave him some sort of honor. My reply was that he could have volunteered like I did.

P.S. Truth in advertising. I did not have a deferment. I enlisted under the draft board system (lottery came later). I figured my time was coming and I thought the Air Force was a better alternative. Since I retired from the Air Force it definitely was.

Yes but you tucked a dig at Clinton not serving into your post just like Trump didn't. What Clinton did was wrong. What Romney did was wrong. Trump doing it doesn't make it OK because others have done it. It's those subtle digs that flesh out what your thought process really is.

I would have thrown a dig at Trump but the context was past presidents. You are shoving your own biases into what you read.
