Sumitomo HTRZ Review

This is my own personal experience with this tire.
I have a basic bolt on 04 GT Convertible.
This is my daily driver.
I now have about 1,200 miles on these tires.
They are 275/40-17 and 315/35-17.
I got them off American Muscle with black Bullits for $900.

After the 500 mile break in, I've started pushing them. Not auto cross or drag racing. Just spirited daily driving in dry and wet.
So far I'm very impressed as a lot of people have given them bad reviews.
I had Nitto Motivos 245's before these.
The Sumi's are much more stable and give me more confidence in corners.
Again, daily driving. No racing.
I have pushed them periodically when no one else was around.
I've taken a 35mph corner at 70mph and almost went into the wall, but I feel it was more of my stock suspension to fault for this.
I just drive 120 miles tonight in the rain and hit almost 100 on a nice curve on an interstate. I usually do the same in dry conditions. It was in the 50's.
Safe? By no means. But I gradually tested the waters and am very surprised they kept traction so well.

From reviews I've read about the NT 555's and what youtube videos I've seen comparing them, I would assume the Nitto's are better.

But, for the price, these make a reasonable choice for a daily driver.

I will continue to update as the miles and driving experiences accumulate.

Throw on some nice and sticky tires on your car.

Then come back on here and post about how much you hate the sumis lol.

I'd agree just for daily driving they aren't bad but I couldn't get traction to save my life with my 315 sumis

I am actually hoping to go with the NT555 when I need to replace the Sumi's. I can then give an accurate comparison.
The only problem is I intend to add power in some form next year, so my assessment may not be apples to apples.

I see you have a V2 and 4.10's. I'd imagine it would be challenging for you to get traction on most street tires.
What are you running now? How is the traction?

I noticed no difference between the newer Sumis and NT555s on my Cobra when it came to traction. In fact, I liked the Sumitomos better because they were quieter. Now when I had the NT05Rs... that was a different story.

Now - when I first got that car it had 5 year old Sumitomos with different wear/traction ratings. Those were horrible and I couldn't wait to replace them. The ones I got from AM in late 2011 were great. The ones I got a month ago are also great so far. (HTRZ 2's)

Wow! No difference? Did you have the same setup with both tires? ie gears, hp and tq, etc.
what sizes were you running?
Being that this is a review I want to make sure the comparisons are equal.
Thanks for the input!

Great write up! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the Sumitomo tires. I actually had the 245's up front and 315's out back on my 2004 Mach 1 and have absolutely no complaints. They lasted a long time, were quite, great for daily driving etc.. The 315's didn't hook up all that great but that had a lot to do with the suspension and temperature outside!

Be careful taking turns at 100+ MPH in the rain, with any tire on your car! But I'm glad to hear the Sumitomo's gave you some confidence.

Keep up the great work with your build and feel free to hit me up if you ever need some assistance!

Thanks!
Yeah, not too smart but wanted to test the waters. Not really trying to duplicate that!

I have the same tires, they had decent traction initially but after a few thousand miles they really lost their traction.

In cold weather they are worthless.

Sorry, dont frequent MM like I used to.

No difference. Same setup. 4.10s and basic mods in my 99 Cobra. The old Sumis were complete shit, but when I removed a set of drag radials for the newer Sumitomos they were every bit as good as the 555s I had on a separate set of wheels and maybe better in wet weather.

Both were in 315/35-17.

Plus I think they look nice

Thanks for replying!
I was thinking of updating this soon.
I don't know the mileage off the top of my head, but it a few thousand.
Anyways, great tread life and have been perfect for my daily driver with basic bolt ons.
I've driven dry, rain, freezing rain, and they are great! I've been testing them with 2nd gear romps trying to spin them but they still keep good traction.

I'll look up the mileage I put them on and give a full update.

I love my Summi's. They blow my old NT555's out of the water. Maybe not the best for launching but a great all around tire at a decent price.
