Do 2001 mustangs have...

A hood latch? An actual latch on the hood itself? Because since I've been working under the hood it is a pain in my butt..I cannot get my hood to close unless I drop it from 2 feet and slam it which I HATE doing.

I did read in another forum on here that some had the same issue..so ya'll just moved the latch on the car over more to the passenger side. I will try that but first wanted to know about a hood latch.

Looks like that something might have been their and is missing. But it's just a square opening that seems to have nasty rust around it.

Thanks!

When I place my hood down, the lock grabs but it has like 1" slack and while I was driving on the highway and I saw it flip up and grab and it scared the shit out of me because I read stories about the aftermarket ones smashing windshields.

For a solid grab, the 2' drop is the only method I've gotten to work. Even pushing down really hard doesn't initiate the solid grab...

The hood latch would be the part you use to release the hood after you pop it. and I have to slam mine pretty hard too. I drop mine from about a foot to close.

poor hoods... I was working on my Fiance's mother JEEP the other day and when I did a 2' drop with the hood upon completion, she asked me if I was planning on breaking everything I just fixed...

Good to see I'm not the only one with this issue.

Although it seems much worse on my Cobra hood. Hood sits too high, doesn't even want to go latch down with the 2nd latch, and the striker is adjusted all the way up.

I can let mine down all the way and push it and it'll latch ?
I even have a windstar putting a little pressure on it?

But to make it latch just dropping is the ol 1-2' drop method.

There's a fix online for this. You add a washer on top of the latch brace clip. I'll try to dig it up because I know I saved it somewhere.

Here's the link to the original posting:
Mustang Hood Mod - www.Evilcartman.com

Mustang Hood Latch Adjustment\Modification
I found that no adjustment to the hood striker would help with the difficulty I had closing my hood. Tired of slamming the hood to get it to shut, I started looking at it and found a simple solution. I installed a washer that acted like a shim between the latch brace and the latch, raising the latch up just enough to make the hood close perfectly.
Required tools:
1) Small Phillips screw driver
2) Torx T-30
3) 5/16 socket or wrench
4) Medium sized washer
Approximate time to complete: 15 minutes

Step 1: Remove the 4 plastic screws along with the grommets they thread into.

Step 2: Remove the plastic cover.

Step 3: Remove the three 5/16th bolts and the T-30 Torx screw.

Step 4: Carefully remove the latch assembly and set it aside. It does has sharp edges.

Step 5: Make sure latch brace clip stays in place.

Step 6: Place washer on top of brace. I used a drop of silicon glue to keep in place, but it is not necessary.

Step 7: Close-up of washer. I used a fairly thick one. Two may be needed.

Step 8: Put latch back in place and get T-30 screw started. Don’t tighten completely.

Step 9: Tighten the three 5/16th bolts. Tighten the two forward facing bolts first, then the bolt on top, then the torx screw. Don’t over tighten the torx, the cheap clip won’t put up with it. I took the time to use touch up paint and paint the scratch screw heads and bracket. It is covered though so it doesn’t matter.

Step 10: Reinstall plastic cover. Install grommets first then plastic screws just push in.

Step 11: Close hood and check alignment on each side.

Step 12: Adjust bump stops under hood to get the hood flush with fenders.

Step 13: Check both sides.

Make sure that when the hood is closed and the bump stops are adjusted that the hood doesn’t float. Check it by closing the hood, pulling up and down on the hood to make sure it is not loose. Raising the latch too much and lowering the bump stops may make the hood loose. You are looking for the sweet spot between the three contact points on the front of the hood. If your hood still is difficult to shut you may try and install two washers stacked and make sure the latch is lined up with the hole in the hood.

Will probably do this tomorrow since it's so easy... after I replace my steering wheel and column panels.

Well I did shim my striker, but apparently I'm missing that brace. Chalk it up to more crap missing from my car.

I always had to drop my hood from 2' to close it. Once I got my Cobra bumper, I had to slam it from 2' to get it to close.

wow i though i was the only one who had to do the 2" drop thing lol.

I took my car to a shop once, and the mechanic went to close the hood. Well he kept dropping it from like 3 inches up. then when it landed, he kept pushing down on it, trying to get it to latch. He fiddles with it for a while before looking at me and says "do you always have this problem?" I just shook my head, went up and dropped that sucker. I then turned to him and said, "slam that bitch".

There is a much easier way to fix this issue by loosening the 2 bolts and raising the latch slightly until u get it where u want it.

I circled them in red from the pictures above.
