so i just got done with a move from VA to FL and can finally start on my new project. im going to copy and paste my posts from a diff forum to catch yall up.

but if your a fan of bobber/short chop/ rat bike mixes you will like this.

i traded a honda crf 230 dirt bike for this thing. so i wasnt expecting a perfect running bike. but yeah.

i really dont know much history on the bike. i bought it hard tailed and running with a tick. then a clank then an explosion lol. so now im tearing it down to rebuild it. never been this deep into a motorcycle before. havent bought a manual yet lol. and i will before i start tearing deep into the engine.

im confident in my abilities in doing this. im a gas turbine tech. and have bult a lot of import and domestic car engines......and a lot of mowers and a few tractors....which is prolly closer to this harley.

this is also i zero budget build. i just moved down to FL and dont know any connections down here or even know any one else that wrenches.

anyways...PICTURES!

when i finalized the trade. MY buddy bill wants to know if ya like his ass....

when i brought her home.

what it turned into

after a 300 mile ride

about this time it ate its own ****.

the cylinder and piston

and last night i got the motor out and on the work bench.

going to take it down to frame and forks today. then scrub all the grease and grit off the frame. and over the next few days prep it for re paint.

if you guys got any hints tips tricks how too's i would appriciate it!!!

---------- Post added at 09:52 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:49 AM ----------

torn the whole frame down to just frame and forks then spend a few hours scrubbing it clean

got the rest of the bike spread out over 3 work benches lol

box of spare parts.

---------- Post added at 09:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:52 AM ----------

anyways discovered some more damage while i was digging. looks like i need to replace one tappet and one cam. here are pictures of the damage.

pitted and worn cam.

pitted and worn tappet

also got around to wiping the carbon off the pistons....im not the first one here... they are already bored out to .060 over is there even any point to try and bore it to .070 over or should i break down and spend the 300 bucks and get shiny new jugs.

Piston

havent got the other head off yet. i have one bolt that is a BITCH. and i dont have air tools at my new house so its ratched socket and a bfh. got it to budge a little but didnt break the tourqe. it will come though not in a rush.

thanks for your help and any info is much appriciated.

---------- Post added at 09:57 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:55 AM ----------

here is an update from last night

got the rear jug off yesterday....didnt look much better. the rear jug was bored out to .050 and the front was bored to .060. i really think i might get new jugs and start with nice new pistons rods and flywheel assembly. since the front rod has a nice amount of play. and maybe some andrews cams. IDK im trying to stay cheap but this is telling me to spend money every time i turn a wrench.

some pictures.

been working on shaving the forks down a little bit today. havent finished obviously lol. but almost got the big stuff done. then its just hours and hours and hours of hand sanding! which is good because i need to start doing cheap and affective mods while im waiting for funds to come in lol. some pics.

also. i left the forks on the frame since i dont have a vice or anything of the sort. this way i could use both hands on the grinder and cutting wheel. turned out pretty good i think.

once im satisfied with the sanding im going to remove them and paint them gloss black to match the frame. should look good! im trying to limit the not black stuff to just the primary and gear case covers and the valve covers.

making some slow and steady progress hand sanding down these forks.

not a whole hell of a lot to update. started a new job in a new state so ive been concentrating on that the past week.

But i did get the forks ready to paint and got the triple tree off.

getting ready for prime and paint.

LOOK! i found fresh grease! and a new bearing!!!

first time that has happened on this bike lol.

I knocked the spring studs that hold the springs on the seat off so i can move them back a few inches. and ground down some rust on the frame and am starting to slowly prep it for paint.

next up in a few weeks ill tackle this pile of sh!t and test my mechanical abilities.

Thanks man. Dont push it off too long because no matter what you do your going to have to tear it doq n to this level to get the details just the way you want them.

not a whole hell of a lot going on again. waiting on funds and doing small side projects. also trying to get my new house's front yard to look halfway decent.

anyways about the bike.

i got a question about paint. im going to re paint this frame. my question is that it is powder coated.....poorly...should i just grind it all off and prime and paint from the ground up. or is it safe to scuff the powder real good then prime and paint?

also im looking at a set of jugs that are kind of rusted. i have a sand blaster at work i can use so that no biggie.

but can i paint the jugs with engine enamel or will it affect cooling?

here is what ive been up too

sanding and grinding pitted chrome for paint. here are two pieces. going to do the oil tank other valve cover and the cam cover over this long weekend.

also re welded the seat mounts on where i think they will be a LOT more comfy. because i love riding for long periods of time. and cant do that if im not comfy lol.

frame with the mounts moved back. is shown in the picture above.

alright! pretty big update! i traded one of my many AK-47's for a 74 basket case. bottom end is BRAND NEW! andrews cams! new tappets and pushrods! it has extra almost everything. came with 3 fenders 4 or 5 headlights 2 swingarms 2 brake assemblies front and rear a S&S super E carb. also has a clean and clear title! if you want to add up the price of my AK i paid roughly $350 for this. but i got that gun in a trade for doing some work for a guy. so technically its free! :p!!!!!

between this engine and the other one i have everything i need to get it running. i do need new pistons. these ones look a little aged. but the cylinders are original and have never been bored.

gasket set pistons rings and go!

some pictures!

everything!

front wheel spokes and one of the headlight assemblies.

the top ends. jugs are under the heads.

the lower end. with a new starter! no more kicking lol.

anyone know what this wheel is? it looks home made

the wiring harness....im going to go ahead and junk this lol

only downside is there is no key. but i guess i can get one made i have a buddy who is a locksmith.

more cosmetics and a pair of shocks

frame, gas tank, a fender and a corbin seat

all 3 of them lol is it possible to have too many!?

well i suppose this is an update. its more of a standyby for an update later but whatever. sit down shut up and read my story!

When i lived In VA i had trey hodges for a grey beard and he helped me a lot in a short period of time. well today i found another local grey beard.

all i need to do to this short chop bob mess is the engine and some paint. well greybeard is going to take my parts bike off my hands and give me all the parts to rebuild the motor, then show me how to do it. its a trade my parts for his labor/parts/knowledge.

so hopefully ill have a running engine in a week or so. and a running bobber the way i want in in another month or two. i still have painting and visual stuff i gotta do.

EDIT: since this isnt a motorcycle forum ill put up the definition of a grey beard.

Grey Beard - An old biker who has been working on old harleys since they were new. These folks usually have grey beards and long hair. they are also willing to lend there time and experiance to a younger generation for little to no cost just to pass on the love of building motorcycles.

He contacted me since I was selling my parts bike. And we just hit it off. He invited me to his shop and I went nuts. He had pans and shovels all over!! And a few record holding drag bikes from the 80's. I'm going to the track with his race team in a few weeks. He asked if I wanted some hands on in the pits.....uh...yes...yes I do. Also invited me to his shop to help out anytime. I'm not going to get paid but I'll get knowledge. And that's what I want lol.

If you just start talking to old folk most of them want to teach you how these things work...it's a lost art

alright time for an actual update!

I've been doing body work and sanding and sanding and priming and priming....no paint yet lol.

so far ive sanded down the forks and was able to prime them with rustoleum filler-primer. stuff works amazing BTW. almost wanted to keep them polished. but for the time being i dont want shiny stuff....at all.

thought about maybe having some polished aluminum...decided against it. so i have the first coat of primer on the forks tonight after sanding for two days. and i Plasti dipped my cam cover and primary cover. reason i plasti dipped and didnt paint was because the plasti dip will just peel off when i start feeling squirrley and polish the aluminum to a shine. (most likely when i get a springer front).

and since the frame is powder coated and i had to sand some of that off to put the seat pins in place i used the filler primer is a few spots that i sanded down and evened over. so its ready for paint too!

tomorrow im going to ride down to the guy who is working on my engine and drop off my cam and primary covers and ill get an update on the engine and how its coming along!

And now im going to soak my hands in epsom salt and try to convince my fiancee to let me buy a sander. anyways PICTURES!!

the forks!

The primary and cam covers!

and the frame. it was hanging when i painted it but i dint want to leave it hang over night.

alright well i made my first custom thing today. made a battery box out of an old ammo box i had laying around. Now ive seen boxes hanging off of frames like a saddle bag but thats not for me. so i cut it down to fit the battery i still have to weld it back together but its hot and im taking breaks here and there. i work in 125 degrees while im at work. when im off i try to keep it below 100 degrees lol.

here is a quick how to with no pictures attached.

step #1 - Shoot way too much than a normal person. and you will come across one of these old ammo cases. or go to any gun swap meet and they are only about 10 bucks. i think walmart might even sell them.

step #2 - take the correct readings. i measured my battery and went with the following guidelines. i went 4 1/8" from top to bottom. and 4 3/4" from width to top bottom cut. then on top i went with 2 3/4" on the side with the latch and 2" on the side with the hinges.

step #3 - waterproofing. some people will say OMG thats not water proof your going to electrocute to death!!!OMG!!! well not so much there is an O-ring around the top that makes this AIR tight once its sealed. of course there will be holes for the wires to come in. and im going to coat the inside of the box with plasti dip to make it 100% non-cunductive.

the o-ring is easy to remove and all you have to to is cut it to length (later)

step #4 - take your harbor freight $9 cutting wheel and start chopping! this is pretty straight forward just follow the lines. and after about 20 minutes you will end up with this.

i still need to weld everything together. but for now im taking a beer break. then i need to find a free rear fender....ill get pictures of finished product

alright boys and girls im going to start uploading from a different photo place thing but im not going to change the pics above. they will come back at midnight tonight lol.

but over the weekend ive been working on getting the frame ready and i layed on the first two coats of paint today. as you can see from the pictures im a noob at painting. so im going to put on a few more coats to thicken the paint up and then wet sand with some 2000 grit after it cures for 24 hours. hopefully it will look good in the end. if it doesnt then **** it im going to ride it anyways.
