2011 4.6L CrownVic into 96 Mustang GT

Hey guys!

My neighbor just purchased a 96 Mustang GT with a blown engine. While buying parts at a Junkyard, one of the sales reps there told him that one of the engines they're selling - a 2011 Crown Victoria 4.6L - can swap with the Mustang. He's interested in doing a swap with that engine, but he wants to know if it is possible to do so in the first place.

Thanks in advance!

It is possible, he need to swap over the upper intake plenum/tb/exhaust manifolds/ and wiring harness/coil packs from his mustang. It will give him a decent bump in power too. Should be able to retain his Mustang flexplate/flywheel since it will most likely be a 6bolt crank in both engines.

He will have to drill and tap the coolant crossover on the '11 Engine for the second ECT Sensor that is found on 96-98 GT NPI Engines.

He will need to switch his fuel rail as well since his 96 is return style and the 11 is returnless.
Thanks for the info! Another question though, he has the PI-type intake and a Ford Racing 96-04 4.6L oil pump, will they work on the CrownVic engine?

Yes those will work. The intake on the crown Vic is the exact same intake found all PI engines. If he has a Dorman intake on his car now he can junk it and use the crown Vic intake. You can thank me later :)
Make sure the flex plate is the same and make sure u get the ecm

Why would he need the ecm? It's a 2V. You will need to swap the oil pan, timing cover, upper plenum, and various sensors. Valve covers too. You can tap the plastic out in the back of the untake for the heater core tube. I tap it, drill it into the water jacket, then I put the tube in with epoxy on the threads or silicone would work too. Exhaust Manifolds will be different too.

Did you ever figure it out? I did the same swap 96 to a 2011 4.6 and my car drives sluggish and sounds like a back fire and shut off over 50 mph if i floor it
You might want to make your own thread as most of these members are no longer active.

On a side note, what was said above is accurate. If you’re having issues it’s because something wasn’t hooked up, is broken or installed incorrectly. I suggest going over the harness and making sure everything is plugged in.
