Recently installed a clutch pedal assembly and now the steering shaft sticking out of the column seems too short...do they slide in and out?
It needs to move out 1/2 inch for the bolt hole to line up with the shaft that has the u joint and rag joint on it.
I've tried putting a breaker bar on it and hammering on it through the firewall but it doesn't move...Bigger frickin hammer?

Yeah the lower part of the column collapses up into the upper part of the column for safety reasons (i.e.- car accident) but Im not sure exactly how far? Some members have mentioned inserting the bolt then wrapping a piece of rope several ft long around that bolt then using the rope to extract the part by yanking on it really hard with both hands.I haven't tried it personally, but it sounds like a good option. The picture shows the collapsible part.

Yeah it's a pain in the ass. What I did with mine was attaching the rag joint part to it (disconnected from the rack of course), and hit that with a hammer, kind of like a slide hammer. If you have a slide hammer handy that would be even better, and you could probably hook right onto the end. Also use lots of penetrating oil at the slip joint. They can really bind up after all those years, and the oil helps to work it loose.

That's what I thought.....it's just really stuck in there...thanks for the oil tip....now if I could get oil to flow uphill, lol...going to spray wd40 and let it sit overnight ...try hammering on it in the morning.
