Police scanners allow you to monitor their talk to try and guess where they are, but they are illegal to have in cars here in MN. Radar/Laser detectors are what you are thinking of I'm guessing. That's what they use to check your speed. We'll let FoxFive chime in on this one, lol.

i'm looking for something that'll detect cops around me. radar/laser and police radio transmission. i got pulled over not by the cop using a radar/laser detector but because he happened to be around that area when i screeched off the stop sign. it wasn't really that loud either, he just decided the state needed more money or some **** like that. i'm mainly local driving and i barely see any cops doing speed traps around my area.

I'll give you some input as a fellow Mustang enthusiast. I've been a cop for 11 years, I don't write a lot of speeding tickets unless it's something ridiculous or really unsafe. As far as scanners they will be no good to you. All scanners do is monitor dispatch to car and car to car radio transmissions. As far as radar detectors, they may help if radar is being run on a steady on position, for example a cop sitting on the side of the road with the radar on continually, or a cop driving with the radar in a moving on position. Most cops use Lidar, or Laser Radar, or use radar in a manner where they turn it off, then on so as not to be detected. Just be smart when your hauling ass, like maybe a 100 mph run up the on ramp, then back off, or a quick burst on the highway, then back off. If your flying or racing for any distance your taking a change of getting stopped. I think cops are a little more lenient in the North East, then in California. My brother in law got stopped and ticketed because his Harley was too loud in Beverly Hills. We went out to visit and my mother in law got stopped for running a stop light, the cop was a dick too say the least. The cops around here use alot of discretion. 3 of the cops I'm buddies with in the area have built stangs, and like to get on it and do the occasional smoke show. I think radar detectors are a waste of money, be smart about it and your should be ok.

Radar/Laser detectors only work if they are using it at the time, so that's not gonna help. And as far as the scanners go, back in the day you'd have to try and watch signal strengh, which again only works if they are talking. Not sure if you have a smartphone, but there are police scanner apps too, but that of course doesn't show signal strength. Best thing I've found is to admit fault, even though that only helps on the more minor things. "Yeah, I know it was dumb".... can't think how many times I've said that, hahahaha.

Admitting fault does make a difference with a lot of cops. There are hard asses out there, even being on the job I see that. I made a lot of arrests, and stopped thousands of cars. I have only had two or three speeding trials over the years, and I think I have only written a handful of tickets for misuse of power. Those were for people being total idiots, like a guy blowing donuts right in front of the side walk of a shopping plaza when it was open. If somebody bakes the tires in front of me, they are getting stopped, but I'm using the stop for as a reason to see if they are cocked, wanted, have drugs in the car, or are suspended etc. If they are decent they are getting a warning and being sent on there way.

hahah friggin hose draggers:gayfight2: Blowing lights so they can save the basement :) Just kidding we have good fire guys in Town. Two of them just got injured trying to restrain a guy that stopped hs car in front of the fire station, got out, and started punching out the big garage windows. I gave the kid a little reality check when I showed up and he tried to pull away from me. :naughty:

haha i definitely didn't tire roast though. i will be fighting this ticket. i did take off fast. i rather get a speeding ticket than a expedition of speed ticket because you can't go to traffic school for a expedition of speed. a point off will affect my job.

Cops around here are cool too. I haven't met one I didn't actually like. I don't really speed though lol. And I think I'm pretty good at the whole "a time and a place for everything" thing.

Still no tickets.

Lol I used to that, bring it up to 90-100 and then back down to merge. One time though I got caught. 87 in a 65. The dude was nearly a mile a way from the top of the on ramp I didnt see him till it was far too late.

Depending on the state radar detectors can be illegal to use in your vehicle. If you are oin the market for detector you get what you paid for, if you get a cheap one you will get cheap results. My personal opinion after ownership of Valentine One and Escort Passport X50, the Valentine one is the best choice. Simply because of the directional arrows that tell you where the signal is coming from and the range of that detector is superb in both directions (2 antennas ). A lot has changed since I looked at detectors but Valentine, Escort and Beltronics ( bought by Escort ) are the best choices. Now is you live in state where they are illegal to operate you need to invest in stealth detector like Beltronics STI. Be aware cops can detect your detector, STI is 99% stealth. THe more expensive detectors from the brands I listed are immune to most detector detectors except of one which is rarely used in most states. Now if you get clocked by laser than not much will help you other than laser Jammers, which are illegal in most states I think - In Florida where I live they are legal. Now they are not 100% guaranteed to save your ass, but give you leverage over the laser gun. If you get the detector learn how to use it properly and don't rely on it 100%, keep your eyes open. Do some research online about detectors, there is a lot to learn like POP technology that cops use.

Thats my 2 cents.

I have a simple philosophy in that I don't do anything on or off duty that I would arrest somebody for. That being said, I do ocassionally fracture some traffic laws, such as speeding, doing a burnout etc. Most cops do. The difference in some cops and others is discretion. I'm not going to take money out of somebody's pocket fot a burnout, when I do them. Of course it has to be done safely. If I want to blow a donut or practice launches I will go to a closed industrial area or a non residential back road. Of course if someone is being an idiot in a busy area and it is dangerous, I'm more apt to issue a ticket.

There's a few things that you could do if you are going to trial. First prior to trial you could call or speak in person with the police prosecutor or district attorney or whoever prosecutes the cases in Cali. Discuss the situation and nicely ask them if they will place the complaint on file for a period of good behavior. You could also speak with the officer on the day of the trial inquiring the same. On the day of the trial wear a shirt and tie and when it is your time to testify look at the judge and don't be cocky or appear upset. If the cop has you dead to rights on the charge explain to the judge that you had a momentary lapse in judgement while driving a powerful car. I'm not sure of the circumstances of your case but also tell the judge that you did make a mistake but you didn't endanger the public while doing so. Explain that a conviction will effect your job. In NH they cannot brimg previous driving history up in the trial, on during the sentencing. It's worth a shot. That type of offense NH would result in a small fine, no loss of license.
