finally a day warm enough to ride. hopped on the bike for a cruise around town, but then damn near locked up my brakes because i decided at the last second i was gonna make a turn and ride 20 miles away to a state park i've never been to before

dirty bike and shitty pic but oh well. the state park was lame anyways.

i don't think i've really done any new mods since the last time i posted except for a ram mount. the ram mount is awesome because i can have my phone right in front of me so i can use my gps. that means i can do more exploring without worrying about getting lost. i also bought a kit that allows me to charge my phone while i ride but i haven't installed it yet

this bike is still my favorite thing in life

That's awesome! I live in stupid California where every bike has to come from the factory street legal. Pisses me off so ****ing much. I want a dual sport but I would want like a 450r or maaybe a Crf450x or a newer wr450f made street legal. I'm used to race bikes and every time I get on a drz or something im disappointed. Not enough to satisfy me.
Also anyone wanting to get one don't waste your time getting a 250.

bump because bump. new taillight assembly should arrive tomorrow, then new fender later this week or early next week. pics to come soon.

also decided to install my KLX450 headlight yesterday but i'm gonna need to fab some brackets for it and then either buy an LED bulb or lower watt halogen since the housing and lens are plastic. seems to be a bitch, so i might rethink the headlight idea or tackle it one day when i have nothing else to do.

also might be buying another bike if the dude doesn't back out. today i was cruising through some twisties that were slippery as **** from pebbles after it snowed and i came around a corner and sure enough a bike was laid down with a dude trying to pick it up. i hopped off and helped him and followed him to his house to make sure it was still rideable. dude was pissed off and said he's been wanting to sell it. i asked how much he'd take and he said $500. it's a 2001 ninja 500. definitely gonna take him up on that offer if he's serious. it didn't have a muffler and it was loud as ****, so when we were riding back to his house, some old ****head ran out into the road yelling at ME. cocksucker. so many people get an attitude with you when you're riding your bike for absolutely no reason.

yeah, the DRZ is no race bike. i won't drive it on roads with speed limits higher than 55. it's really just a town bike, but it really shines in that area. taking price, capability, resell value, aftermarket, ease to work on, etc. into account, there's really no better bang for your buck. if you're wanting to go 100+ mph every day though, i wouldn't recommend it

Sounds like a good deal if you can get it for $500. How many miles are on it?

i don't know, i realized it didn't have a speedo or odo and the (clean) title just said "exempt" under mileage so i had him knock another $100 off the price lol

it's no show bike, but IMO it was worth $400. i was gonna flip it for an easy profit but now i'm kinda thinking about keeping it.

That actually looks pretty cool. Make it into a cafe racer! I would've definitely bought it too if I saw it.

installed the new fender yesterday and the new taillight today. here are some before and after pics...

before new fender:

after new fender:

before new taillight:

after new taillight:

the fender installation wasn't too bad, just had to drill a few holes since it was a universal fender. the color isn't a 100% match but it's close enough for me. i might have an idea up my sleeve to take care of that though...

the taillight installation was a bitch. i've never done any kind of electrical work and this required disassembling, removing the old circuit board, installing a new processor, reassembling, stripping wires, using connectors i have no experience with, shrink wrapping, removing old taillight and all the side plastics, seat, and rear fender, running all the wires through the most inconspicuous route, making sure they were all plugged in to the right places, etc. and i somehow finished successfully after like 5 hours of ****ing with it. would have taken an experienced person 5 minutes, but it was all new to me. learned some skills in the process though, so i've got that going for me.

the taillight is awesome. can't tell from the pic, but it has a smoked lens. the processor i installed has 5 different integrated blinker modes, so i don't need external blinkers. it functions as a taillight and blinker. i have it on half chase mode right now, which means half of it will flash in a sequential-like pattern when i use the blinker. pretty sweet. didn't get around to installing the flasher relay yet, so the fronts are faster right now, but that will be easy. probably gonna do that tomorrow after i change the oil.

so i'm thinking about selling the bike and getting a legit dual sport. a suzuki DR650S to be specific. they're a lot better offroad and they can be ridden on highways without slinging themselves apart. if i returned my SM to stock, sold the aftermarket stuff separately, and listed the bike for sale this spring, i could probably get decent money for it. maybe even enough to pay cash for a new 2017 DR650S since their MSRP is quite a bit lower than the SM. i'd miss this bike for sure, but i think i'd have more fun on a real dual sport.

i'll have to do some thinking. i don't want this to be a "grass is greener" thing

My room mate was big into dual sports, but he found himself riding off road more and more. A dedicated dirt bike ended up being the way to go for him.

How much riding do you intend on doing off road?

I asked him about the 650 but he hasn't got back to me yet. I'll let you know what he thinks.

thanks austin

i'd probably do more offroad riding than highway riding but it'd be nice to have a bike capable of both

the DR650 makes more sense than the SM, but i'll probably procrastinate on making the decision until my bike is old and worthless

I think it's a good idea. I know you're having fun on your SM, but I've never seen the appeal, because you can't really off road it, like a DS. A guy I work with has DS, and he rides trails with me on my YZ250F, and even takes it around the MX track. I've actually been kicking around the idea of adding a KTM 690 to my dirtbike, so I could ride the back roads around here, and still do some off reading with it. I don't know much about where you live, but I'd much prefer a DS over SM.

Personally I'd prefer two bikes, on and off road, but for some reason the appeal to just randomly veer off the blacktop and hit up a random trail is so appealing. Newer bike is also appealing but if my current ran good I'd be pleased

I would look into a KTM 500, amazing power and great ergonomics. I have a YZ450F, it's an MX bike. I am probably going to buy another bike here soon. Thinking about an RMX450 as I am getting more into trail riding. That or an KTM 300...
