This article applies to all Mustangs with a cable operated clutch setup but will focus on my 1993 Mustang LX with the 2.3L engine as this setup is slightly different than the v6 and v8 cars.

Tools required:

All cars:
1 -- 1/4" drive rachet
1 -- 1/4" drive extension
1 -- 1/4" drive 8mm socket
1 -- flat-tip screwdriver

v6 and v8 engine cars:
1 -- long prybar or you can use a 1/2" drive breaker bar at least 24" long

Step

Crawling underneath the dash board and pedal assembly on the drivers side, pull the clutch pedal towards the back of the car until it stops. Find the clutch quadrant up near the top of the gas pedal. Using a flat tip screw driver to catch the end of the clutch cable in the quadrant, push the top edge of the quadrant where the cable is hooked into, toward the front of the car and pop out the clutch cable from the quadrant.

Step

Safely raise the car by placing the jack beneath the center of the k-member.

Step

Place a pair of jackstands beneath the front subframe edges of the car or two drive-on ramps beneath the front tires.

Step

After the car is safely supported in the air, crawl beneath the drivers side of the car and locate where the opposite end of the clutch cable is attached near the bellhousing. The picture on the left shows the 2.3L equipped Mustang from 1987 to 1993. The picture on the right shows the setup on the v6 and v8 Mustang from 1994 to 2004.

Step

On the 2.3L equipped Mustang, remove the small pin from the barrel.

Remove the barrel from the from the U-clip.

Rotate the U-clip around the edge of the clutch cable until the ball edge can be removed from the clip.

Step

tools required for clutch cable bracket removal (bolt removed in this photo)

Locate the clutch cable bracket where it is bolted to the drivers side framerail.

Using the 8mm socket on the 1/4" drive ratchet and extension, remove the bracket bolt

Step

Next, remove the C-clip from the cable where the cable passes through the bellhousing.

(picture)

pull the cable towards the front the of the car, passing the end of the cable through the bellhousing hole.

(picture)

Step

From the top of the car, pull the pedal end of the cable through from the firewall into the engine bay area.

(picture)

Take note of the routing of the clutch cable between the steering rack/pinion and the oil pan. This routing is the same for all Mustangs regardless of engine size.

To remove the cable from the car, pull the top half of the cable down towards the bottom the car and then straight out from the front of the car between the rack and pinion and the oilpan.

Comparison of the old cable to the new cable.
