Now I want to preface, that this isn't a shitpost on Chevy. I used to love Chevy back in the day and still love the new Vettes, but I personally haven't been a fan of the Camaro since the second gen design. I would just like to know if the New Edge Mustang was a major part of why Chevy stopped production of the Camaro after the F-Body? Or was it because they wanted to take time off to just redesign the new look that we see today? Thanks for any information!

The lack of interest killed/shitty management the F-body.

GM put all of it's development into the Corvette, which left Camaro/Firebird with it's motors detuned. All were relatively small volume, and GM was in dire financial straits in the early 2000's, so it was more cost effective to kill them off first, then the entire Pontiac line after that, to stem the bleeding and get them back on their feet. They brought the Camaro back now, but Pontiac is long gone, and they've learned that too many similar type cars doesn't pan out well.

The Mustang has been around a long, long time, and in the early 80's was being considered to being turned FWD (what later became the Probe), but Ford's customer base retaliated. The Mustang was good competition to the F-body, but I wouldn't say it killed it more than GM's piss poor management over the prior decades did.

I owned a '69 Camaro back in the '70s. I love old Camaros more than I ever did Mustangs. I own a 2002 Corvette and I love the way it looks. To me the F-body Camaro is the worst possible design. I certainly didn't want to buy one and apparently neither did anyone else. Low sales numbers killed the Camaro. Here are some comparison sales numbers.
.....1999: New Edge 133,637..........Camaro 42,098..........Corvette 33,270
.....2000: New Edge 215,693..........Camaro 45,461..........Corvette 33,682
.....2001: New Edge 163,818..........Camaro 29,009..........Corvette 35,627
.....2002: New Edge 145,518..........Camaro 41,776..........Corvette 35,767
There is a foot note saying low production in 2001 was due in part to early production of the 2002. If that were true then why is 2002 production so low? Its pretty bad when the high price Corvette had more sale in 2001 & 2002 than the Camaro (71,394 to 70,785). An ugly design, poor sales, and getting trounced by the competition killed the Camaro in 2002.

So yes. The New Edge Mustang killed the fourth generation Camaro. But pony car sales haven't been that great. Mustang sales may have been over 200,000 in the year 2000 but they were less than 100,000 from from 2009-2013 facing the fifth generation Comaro. They were back up to 134,000 in 2014.

The Mustang is still beating the Camaro in sales. I wonder how low is too low and they kill the Camaro again. (If they do what body will they run in the Cup Series?) Here are US sales for the last five years.
.....2014: Mustang 82,639..........Camaro 86,297
.....2015: Mustang 122,349........Camaro 77,502
.....2016: Mustang 105,932........Camaro 72,705
.....2017: Mustang 81,866..........Camaro 67,940
.....First 6 months of 2018: Mustang 42,428.....Camaro 25,380 31% less than 2017. At that rate 2018 sales will be 47,155.

Really interesting to see the numbers lined up, thanks for the post. I'm not sure what Chevy is going to do with this Camaro. The new body they revealed already got quite a bit of hate because of the ugly front end and tail lights. I personally am not a fan either. The 5th gen Camaro imo just does not look like a Camaro despite their attempts to give it a throwback look like the Dodge Challenger and S197 Mustangs. I find it sad too because I love Chevy cars from the 60s and 70s. My dad who now owns an 2004 GT Mustang used to have a 69 Camaro SS that I used to love riding around in as a kid. I don't think Chevy will stop production of the camaros right now, but I could definitely see it happening again sometime in the future.
