I've got an 88' Gt and have just swapped the old worn out 302 for a built 308. I've gone from EFI to carburetor and need help on setting up vacuum timing advance and where to start on my distributor cap when running my plug wires. Should i use non h.o firing order and what determines the starting point for the cap?

When you are looking at the motor, 12 o'clock is the #1 position.

Then camshaft determines the firing order, look at the cam card.

Get an adjustable timing light, with the vacuum port plugged, set the total timing to about 32 degrees @ 4000 rpms. Then check at idle, should be around 15-20 degrees advance. Then check with vacuum connected at idle, should be around 20-30 degrees.

well when you time it, just plug the vacum line so you can set "base timing"

then plug it back in, your vacum timing will do the rest

No, you need to set the total mechanical timing, which is way more important than initial timing. Idle quality is not as important as not blowing head gaskets every time you floor it.
