Hi guys im new to the board. I came here cause it seems like i find the best answers while roaming these forums before but I have a question that i couldnt find while searching. While trying to fix up my 3.8 to where it doesnt sound like its falling apart my local shop said i had a pulley going out. I've been looking around trying to find out if I had to replace one or all...if i have to replace all are there any kits that come with udps that you guys know of. Thanks for the help in advance.

Welcome

Im guessing the shop just went by ear on their judgement and didnt tell you which pulley did they? UDPs on 3.8s are just the crankshaft and alternator pulley. But since the shop didnt give you a direct answer to which one is making the noise, I doubt getting underdrives will fix your problem.

Possibly the tensioner pulley? To my knowledge no other pulleys "go out", the piece of equipment they drive are usually what goes out, i.e. the powersteering pump, a/c clutch/compressor etc. I could be wrong, but I doubt it :dunno

My suggestion would be to find another shop, or post a vid with the sound in question.

so what your saying veesicks is that it could be be the altinator(which i was going to upgrade), the water pump, or anything that uses the pulley system to run could be gettig ready to crap out? i think ill corral my neighbor one morning cause he is the mechanic at a body shop here in town.

That is exactly what I was saying, once you can locate which piece of equipment is making the noise, then you'll know what to replace. The tensioner and idler pulleys do not drive anything, so it is common practice to say those pulleys are going out/went out, as for the rest, you have the idea. Let us know what you find out :yes

It's more than likely a tensioner or idler pulley. It would take all of a minute to diagnose, rather than wasting money on parts that may not need to be replaced.

I had an idler pulley go back in my ranger. That thing squealed like a SOB everytime I let off the gas at 20mph and less. Made pulling up to houses and intersections incredibly embarrassing.. Was just a pulley that ended up not costing too much if I remember correctly. Was under $100 I know that

are the idler pulleys from autozone good for replacement....i did some searching on vids across google and youtube and found how to check them and found the idler pulley is grinding and spins fast when turned by hand..another question if the tensioner is taking alot of force to pull up on to move is that good or bad...plus i was going to change the alt anyway since i was going to upgrade my headlights and drop a lower end sub system in the trunk to help fill out musical sound.

I don't see why an idler pulley setup from AZ would be a bad choice... Wouldn't be my first choice, but that is personal preference. The alternator however, should most definitely come from a more reputable source. Just my $0.02.

The tensioner needs to have a good amount of tension on it :shiftyeyes That is the purpose of it, keeps the belt nice and tight. Tight like a tiger

well im just going to start with the alt since it whines anyway.
a whine could be the water pump rubbing the timing cover, mine did this and most noobs think its a super charger. it was not even loose on the bearing and no leaking in the wheep hole.
note: tensioner pulley bolt is most likely reverse thread bolt.:)
idler pullley is normal thread.
if its not too loose you can use a exacto knife to remove the bearing dust shields to add grease and prolong its life, also will make it quiet.
