Headers?

Lets say that I install shorty headers to my V6 to dress up the engine compartment. Would this make the exhaust louder? Im not looking to make it louder, the duel exhaust will be good enuff.

Ehh it all depends on the user, some people notice a difference and others dont! Plus you might get 2-3 more horsepower!!

if your installing shorties for performance gain, don't.... you will not get any noticable gains. Might see a slight change in exhaust.

for performance go longtubes. this will make your car louder for sure.

otherwise leave your stockers on. i put down 331rwhp with stock exhaust manifolds.
They don't really do much for sound but if you look at the design it seems as if they would flow better.

If you're just doing it for looks make sure that you clean them off very well before you start the car.
When I installed MAC LT's on my six, some said it sounded HORRIBLE. I didnt mind it but under WOT, it got ricey sounding. At idle it sounded fantastic.

As far as performance....even with multiple custom tunes...I dont have numbers but I would say I lost power in the low end. Now, from 60-120 mph, it was WAY faster. But look, you have to understand why. Headers dont come "tuned" (physically tuned to your car...Im not refering to the tune with the computer). So what happens is it throws evrything out of wack. Most people dont understand that the length and diameter of the header play a critical role in performance. From the shockwave in the pipe to the speed of the exhaust gases exiting the valve...its vital that they are exactly right to achieve gains. The only real way to go with headers is to have them custom made for your specific application...ie "tuned exhaust".

Keep in mind this was with flowmaster duel exhaust and an FIPK upfront...no other major modifications. Shorties arent going to help much with anything and LT's were a huge pain in the ass.

^I've had the exact opposite response from everyone I've come in contact with. I don't think it does, but people mistake it for a gt ALL the time (usually I'm at idle or a low rpms though). It'll sound ricey up high no matter what you do to it.
Thanks for the advise.

what is way faster? And how much down low would you say you lost. I am just debating whether or not to get them.

you shouldn't lose almost anything down low with long tubes. you just need to make sure your tune is on par after you install them.

I had mine tuned by JJ (same guy that did ~C~'s bumble beast) he's also the same guy that had cars on that TV show Pinks. He really is very good. I think we tuned it 4 times to get it up to par. I never put it on a dyno so my opinion is not based on data...just my butt dyno...and it lost power. Alot of people say they gain with it but in my case, I dont think I did.

Beyond that, it caused more problems than it was worth. I was chasing bugs constantly after I put the Macs in. but again, Im just one case. Others have had perfect performance with no issues. If I could do it over again...I would have never put them on.

My definition of way faster is probably not the same as yours. It felt noticably faster....kind of like there was less resistance as I accelerated.
ok thanks. what were some of the problems you encountered? i am jc i want to know if it is worth it. i mean every opinion helps. i know that they add performance and sound. i just want to know the other side you know.
Well i had no real problems with longtubes but if i were to do it again i would have installed gears + tlok before getting lt headers.
ok well i have gears and t lok waiting to install. i guess i will wait and see.
I noted a difference on mine with CLARITY mainly on the exhaust note...think a radio station with a little static that's fine tuned for a clear signal. As far as power, minimally noticed. Of course, I don't have the 6'er, but I don't think that with a stock setup you'll hear much difference since it's muffled and I'm not, heh. Besides, you could just take your stock manifolds off then clean/coat them yourself if you wanted ONLY dress-up. My two cents to save a few more cents, heh.
Thats what I think im going to do, clean them up and find the right paint for them, Thanks...
JA is just mad that he doesn't drive a Mustang anymore...

Don't get Shortie headers. Damn near pointless. Get LT's if you want all new exhaust... if its only engine asthetics you seek, you could try what DR4F suggested with cleaning/maybe powder coat them.

****er....I have a carton of eggs in my "non mustang" for when I run into you in tampa! The economy took my money pit away! It was like getting a raise when I got rid of my hobby car...but I do miss it and will get another one soon. I think I just learned that I will be better off buying a Mustang that is already "better" than fighting with lots of upgrading myself. I suppose most of my problems were just plain bad luck and some bad decisions. thats why I always come off as the guy who says "just leave it alone" to avoid headaches and problems.

But ya, dont get shorties...total waste of money.
I'll bring sausages, let me know when you wanna do breakfast. Stop making excuses and go get another StanG! Who has ever let "not having enough money" stop them from buying something before!!!
Don't dog the shorties...easier install, gives a clean look, and a nice compliment to the crispness of your exhaust note; even if not the most performance-minded.
