Six of one, 1/2 dozen of the other really; the ball-end flailing thingy didn't exist years ago and I've broken the glaze in a lot of cylinders using stones. As long as the bores are straight and round it really doesn't matter IMHO...

the ball is the easiest to use bc it almost naturally stays straight. the honing stones take a little more concentration on keeping them straight. regardless keep a steady speed if honing. moderate...not too fast. just enough to keep the hone tool spinning while you move in n out of the cylinder.

just rings? f-it then

or rings and pistons? hone it
