Just for anybody who is reading through this and considering... we're coming up on two years since I did this and it still works perfectly for me so this certainly appears to be a reliable mod.

Is anyone having a problem with the pac piece not recognizing the steering wheels buttons with the headlights on?

I've reprogrammed the pac piece with the headlights on, ac on, and anything that could affect voltage drop and I still have a problem with the pac piece communicating with the headunit via steering wheel controls. They work for a few days and then stop working. I've noticed that when I have the headlights turned on and I turn down the dimmer that everything works fine. Once I turn the dimmer all the way up that's when I start having problems.

What can I do to fix this issue? I believe its centered around how much the illumination is turned up and how that affects voltage when the steering wheel control communicates with the PAC piece.

I'm using a PAC swi-rs and the boss 302 wheel with a pioneer dex-p99rs

Thanks guys!

Sorry it has been a while, hopefully you see this... I struggled with this for a long time and had multiple conversations with the people at PAC. Their technicians blamed it on a poor GND in the steering wheel and claimed that if I ran my own GND from a piece of metal up into the wheel it would solve the problem, honestly I never tried that but I wanted to mention it.

What I did do was what you mentioned, AC Full blast, turn on all the lights and program. For the most part that has worked for me, here and there it goes out and (it sounds crazy) but giving the wheel a quick smack seems to fix it for me.

Sorry for the necro bump but I seem to have issues with the cruise control. It lights up with the headlights so power is there but cruise doesn't work. All the wires are soldered to the proper wires.

I'm thinking it may be my ground loop. On the ground bolt I have 3 wires. I have the green wire eyelet from old connector, the green from the new harness, and there's a black wire with an eyelet from the new harness also. I didn't see this wire on the writeup. Should this be grounded?

Great write up. I can see this in my future... especially since my steering wheel is probably the most worn item in the car = (

I'm going to be guessing a bit... honestly I try to read back over the tutorial since it has been so long, but... could you have mixed up the audio side buttons and the cruise side buttons? The new harness should not have a green wire for the cruise control side.

Hey! No the green ground was on the audio side. And my stereo controls work perfect so I did that side correctly. Just can't figure out what I did wrong on the cruise side.

Interesting, it is usually the other way around... if you have lights then you obviously have power and ground. At this point that leaves the other two wires, I believe, but could easily be wrong, that blue is illumination and white is signal. Which would mean double check your connection to the white wire (to the gray).

Before you go digging back in... you made sure to test the cruise while going over 35, right?

Yes I was testing on a highway. I'll double check that connection. If good I'll post some pics of my wiring then you can see if any things wrong.

I believe all of the cruise functions go through one wire and it uses different resistors to change up the signal. If your connection is not 100%, the resistance may not be what it is supposed to be and the computer is not recognizing the signal. Just a thought.

And I would ground the black wire with the eyelet. It sounds like it's set up as a ground wire.

Yes I've ground the black wire with an eyelet. Still doesn't work. The black wire is hooked with the green at the connector. Have the green hooked to the harness ground and the black to the small Allen bolt. Maybe should both be ground to same wire? I'll take pics this weekend and post them, see if you can find a hole in my wiring. All connections are soldered so shouldn't be a connection issue. Think I'm the only person here with no issues with audio but do with cruise control lol.

Ground is the same at all points of the vehicle so that should be fine. I believe you are the only one to get audio but not cruise. I'll check back for your pictures

OK here's the pics. Anyone see anything wrong?

1st pic is the 4 wires Ive soldered together from new harness to old connector.

2nd pic is the wires left over in the new harness along with the black wire eyelet that I am grounding on the small torx bolt.

3rd pic is everything, shows the green ground wire, with the green wire from from new harness soldered to it and I also put that black wire eyelet with it.

4th pic is the cruise control buttons with harness, just showing the wire colors that come out of it.

I can't see the pic well, but I want to guess to try and help you out. I can't tell if its brown to blue or not in the first pic. Did you confirm all the wire colors to be correctly matched according to the op?

2 questions, what step can I stop at if I only want the horn and cruise control to work? Also do I need to remove the U shaped horn piece if Im not worried about the other controls? The new wheel has the U shaped horn piece already in place. Thanks

Finally got around to looking at it again. Have code p0581 cruise control circuit A high. Going to take apart my connection and resolder them. See if it makes any difference.
