what happens if the air charge sensor is not connected. when i bought my car it came unplugged and really dont know where the wire going out is. the plug is on the air tube but the conection going out is nowhere to be found. my car ever since i bought it has been running rough, idling rough, misfiring. the car is running better after changing fuel,air filter, plugs, plug wires, cleaned maf and throttle body.

Bad ignition timing is what you get with a faulty or missing ACT sensor.. maybe the EEC was depending on the TPS, MAF & water temperature sensors to do the guess work as mentioned. It's strange if your idle behavior wasn't noticeable.

Oh sorry.. you did mentioned it was idling & running roughly.

sb2f5marine69: are you sure about the a/f ratio? usually, it's the MAF sensor that adjusts AFR.. ACT is in charge of controlling ignition timing according to air density which is affected by temperature. This is why it is relocated to the pressure side in forced induction applications as compressed air rises in temperature therefore requires some retard accordingly. I think.

it measures the temp. of the air entering. and it does have an impact on the A/F ratio. sends the temps of the air to the Computer
i was having problems in my 92 5.0 cause mine went bad. but in my 92 its not on the air tube. its in the lower intake.

ok thnx guys so in other words locate it and replace it right?

my problem is that the plug id on the intake tube but the wire going out to the computer of where ever it goes is M.I.A
how would i go by rplacing it?

the wires should come from the injector harness. scope it out and see if you can find them. if not you could run a new signal wire from pin 25 at the ECM to the ACT and hook the black wire (SigRTN) to either the ECTs black wire or run it straight to pin 46 at the ECM. check this diagram (ACT= IAT or Intake Air Temp Sensor):

The act snsor :This measures the temperature of the air entering the engine. Which impacts the fuel ratio; the cooler the incoming air is the denser it is. Denser air can utilize more fuel, giving us even greater accuracy in obtaining our desired air to fuel ratio.
