I was just wondering if you were to take a '86 and do a MAF conversion on it would you be able to smog it? Cause they plug in to the cars computer don't they, or it doesn't matter?

generally speaking any conversion of that sort(upgrading to a "newer system"), like if you were to go from a carbed car to EFI, your car is going to be tested based on the guidelines set for the year the system was taken from. So say, you have an 82 car and you got the system from an 89, your car will be tested as an 89, make sure you get the emission sticker from donor car too, just so you don't piss off your smog tech

At least that's what I remember from my smog class, but I've yet to practice smog, as I really am against most of its rules.

goodluck!

MAF cars are cleaner that is why the California Mustangs were the first cars to have mass air back in 1988.
