Im done with Darrells article but I cant get the images resized to 500x500. I tried using Irfanview but it when I tried changing one pixel side it changes the other. If someone would resize a few of these images for me it would help out a bunch.

For Irfanview, since the width is the only thing that is restricted, just go to resize/resample, and put the width at 500...yeah it automatically adjusts the length, but that shouldn't be a problem I don't think.
