The catch is that it may have issues with newer operating systems. However, it's free directly from Adobe and would be a great introduction to this amazing program. I used to use it, and it can still do 95% or more of what I'm using with my newer Photoshop CS5.

From the link, it looks like all of the Creative Suite 2 programs are available if you care to test them out.

Edit: By the way, I was running Windows 7 with Photoshop CS2 before I upgraded to CS5, so it should load in Vista and 7.

I don't know squat about Macs. This version is no longer eligible for the cheaper upgrades, but I can't imagine it's so gimped you couldn't use it. I'd guess they want you to try it and like it so that you want to buy the high priced current version.
