I would look at it closer and make sure the teeth on the quadrant are still in good shape. They tend to strip when they get older.

Common problem on these damn things. One of these days I am going to change out my quadrant.
If it was me I would just buy one and keep it in the box until the plastic one breaks. Sometimes having a adjustable setup can be more trouble than it's worth.
