Hello I recently rebuilt my motor, .30 over pistons, stock new crank, bigger valves from MMR, stage 2 cam, had heads decked from machine shop, followed a book and tons of info out there, checked tolerances, check timing had adjustable crank gear retarded both cams to R2 checked centerline and matched with com cams 110 centerline, everything is brand new in the motor bottom end and heads but not stock, and first start it has a terrible ticking or knocking noise that goes with the rpm, I cant seem to figure it out, I got oil pressure, it sounds fine out the exhaust but terrible sound from engine, I checked and tighten exhaust bolts, I'm just trying get some opinions/diagnostic before I go any farther and hopefully its not as bad as it sounds, any help is appreciated

Is it coming from the top or bottom end. It’s hard to tell where it’s coming from. Also pull the plugs and check compression.

as stated above, its hard to tell where the source of the noise is on a video. top end or bottom? also if you have a stethoscope or something and hold it to the valve cover. says stage 2 cams and bigger valves.. is there sufficient clearance in the stock valve covers? some camshafts will require aftermarket valve covers due to the size of lope on the cam will cause clearance issues with stock cover

its top end, I pulled two plugs and they seemed a hair oily haven't done compression test, I realized I'm having oil issues I think, I replaced the oil and filter today it seemed there was alittle weird material in it and maybe clogged, my oil was off grey color, I put 5w-20 with half qt of royal purple engine break in additive originally maybe that's why, after new oil and filter the lashers are actually getting pressure to heads now, This might be an issue but I did fill my oil pump with assembly lube when I was building it if that matters maybe its clogging everything. I don't know if the tensioners weren't getting pressure and maybe jump timing idk I'm thinking of option's.

I’d check compression and pull the lash adjusters making sure they’re not collapsed. And are you sure it’s oil on the spark plugs? If it is it’s got to be coming from somewhere, whether it’s valve stem seals or rings it’s getting in somehow.
