So... remember the mirrors and blackout panel I painted?

Well, noticed today there was a BIG bubble in the passenger mirror. After washing the car the bubble cracked taking the paint from that area all the way pat the primer with it exposing the mirror's texture again. Also noticed the top portiton of my blackout panel has chipped away causing the primer to show...

Now I get to repaint all that stuff.... sigh....

I think the reason the blackout panel is chipping is when I removed the masking tape from the top, the paint pealed back some with it. Maybe I did not let it dry long enough... because the primer seems attached fine but the black top did not attach good to the primer.

Gonna blast a good bit of adhesion promoter on the mirror when I redo it. I think the humidity got the best of that mirror when I painted it.

That sucks, but at least you think you found what went wrong the first time and can fix it this time around :yes

Lets hope. Gonna redo the mirror starting Thurs depending on the weather. Suppose to rain some this week. Not sure when I am gonna have time to do the trunk panel again.

I think im gonna grab some paint removed for the mirror and start completely over. I should have my polisher by then as well so I can see how much more shine I can get from it out of that clear coat.

Be careful w/ some paint removers. A lot of them love to eat plastic.

next time you could try doing some clear coat over them... might help with the chipping!

That's what I though until I put them on the car. Makes a world of difference.

Oh, I cleared... theres a whole thread about my project. These things are like mirrors... I spent a long time sanding and polishing.

I remeber when I painted this side there was a small bubble at this location but I thought it would not get worse... apperently I was wrong.

Actually, the thing you want to do is take the tape of as soon as you are done painting. When the paint is dry it is bonded partially to the tape, hence the rips when you take it off.

And when you pull the tape off, dont just pull it straght off, pull it against itself and that helps to give you a nice "clean cut" line.

Aginist itself? Can you explain a bit more. I was pulling it off at a 90 degree angle.

So far I know to pull it off right after I am done painting, correct?

Yeah, you definitely dont want to pull it at a 90 degree angle. That is actually the worst way you can pull tape off, it is has the most probability of "tearing" the new paint film and leave a jagged edge.

Take this mock photo for example and pretend what i just painted is on the bottom side of the tape. See how im pretty much pulling at a 180 degrees. Im pulling the tape against itself. Does that make sense with the pic?

I wouldnt pull it off immediately after painting, i would let it set up one or two minutes first, but dont let it dry all the way. Another benefit of pulling it against itself, is that it helps to "cut" the paint line and leaves a nice even paint line, even if you have to wait to unmask it till its already dry.
