t-56 transmission swap

7443 Views 26 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Jazzer The Cat
so i was trying to think of what i want to do first with my car, i drive it daily to work except for in the rain and snow, but anyways, i was thinking after income taxes come in i want to do a t-56 in place of the 5 speed in car. i found one on jegs website for around $2500 new, but my question is, what else will i need besides the transmission to hook it up and make it work right? and any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

it should bolt up with no problems, eh only thing I could think of is the driveshaft length which shouldnt be an issue.
To be honest you maybe able to find cheaper possibly Im looking at getting a t-56 as well. I want to buy a used one or salvaged one and rebuild which is cheaper I think.
Something to consider...

t-56 6th gear= .62
tr-3650 5th gear= .62
t-45 5th gear= .68

I know some people only consider this swap thinking of improved gas mileage and not the improved strength.
^ I was unable to notice any difference between the gears mentioned. They are just too close, but certainly some improved mileage on longer road trips.

go with the six speed u will have to change the length of the driveshaft but it would be nice to have with a dd and if u change the gears in the rear. just something to think about. good luck bro
I was hoping you'd post your thread Jazzer...
^ SOMEBODY had to do it.... slacker
jazz i like your little comments in third person hahaha
i like the way jazzer only posts in the t56 swap and suspension threads:D

The driveshaft length IS an issue. You have to use a cobra driveshaft and crossmember. There is an issue with the reverse lockout too that Jazzer explains in the thread he posted.

This is not exactly right. There are several models of the T-56 that offer up different gear ratios. Several of them have a .5 6th gear which I would think should up the gas mileage a good amount.

This is another good thread for T-56 info
T-3650

Jazzer knows what's up with the T-56 swap, and the transmission in general. He's the one who schooled me on them :)

well right now it has 4.10s in the rear end, so it runs kinda high rpms on the highway, i usually run 75 to 80 on the way to work, i did expect the drive shaft to be changed, ill have to look into the reverse lockout as someone mentioned, im not in a big hurry so i guess ill shop around for a used one and just see what the price difference would be between a new one and rebuilding one. so it sounds fairly basic just bolt up, swap out the crossmember and driveshaft, what about electrical hook ups and what not, will i need run any new wiring for a different tranny or will all of the stock stuff work?

A six speed out of a termi isn't going to give you better gas mileage. They have the same (or close to the same) final drive as a 3650 five speed. You'll have to look around because Tremec makes six speeds with a .5 final drive. That'll be the only trans that'll get you better gas mileage.

As far as I know, the reverse lockout thing is the only issue with the swap. I think you have to cut off and re-use one of the connectors from the old transmission too. Jazzer can give you the low down, he's actually done the swap. I'm just relaying what I've read and learned when I researched the swap.
gsh.... go through my T-56 swap thread EVERYTHING you will ever need to know about the swap is in there. This includes the gear ratios and all electrical work needed :yes

Jazzer :)
They also make conversion kits...

There are more but that's one of them. Pricey, yes, but it's a complete package to get your 6-speed. I've looked into before as well, but I can't justify spending $2500+ for 3-4 points on my mpg.
OH and listen to Jazzer.

He is the all-knowing for this swap :)

I thank you, supra... and may you be blessed with many children
