Okay so I'm about to order a t5 rebuilt kit and see on the Ford Racing kit, it says 87-93 needs additional input bearing and race, and it's only on the 2.3...why is this? I have a 5.0 t5 and 2.3 t5, so if its a case difference I can still use the kit I guess, but why is it different?

Thanks

So would there be a way to use that rebuild kit on a 2.3 trans, or would I need to get a different rebuild kit?

the rebuild is the same, bearings and blocker rings are the same, the only thing that is different is the input bearing. All you have to do is find a new 4cyl bearing. Or if you have a 5.0 t5, rebuild it and when you have it apart have the input shaft turned down for the 2.3 pilot size.

Yep^ what he said. But with this caveot, those rebuild 'kits' are a huge waste of money. Most of it are parts that never wear and wont cause the usual issues that lead people to want to 'rebuild' their trans. You can toss all that stuff in your trans and will still clash in gear or worse yet, not want to go into gear, and will not stop noise if it had noise issues before. Best way to rebuild it is buy a video from someone like bob hanlon and only replace what it needs. Usually blocker rings, sliders and whatever gears are worn. Jmho.

Okay problem is I can't find anywhere that sells tht 4cyl bearing/race, or just specific parts instead of a kit. Any places? I mean my brother put that kit in his trans (alon with like billet cluster support, bronze shifter cup, ect.) and his trans was the best trans either of us have ever used..

What 4 cyl bearing and race are you talking about? The input bearing? It's exactly the same as the V8, same diameter input, difference is the diameter of the pilot bearing which is in the crank, not the trans, so I'm really confused what you keep talking about?

Well on all the kits it says the diameter is different and i need a different bearing...I guess I'll have to get a caliper and measure it to see..

Input bearing is the same as far as I have seen. If its different, its available locally at your parts store. They are basically a wheel bearing. Race is the same as the V8 because the bearing reainers interchange. Ill call and verify on the bearing for you.

Ok, just got off the phone with the tremec guy. He said the retainers are the same for most years, but he couldnt be certain because they dont make them any more. What year do you have? Tag numbers would be good off the trans tag.

Ok, here is a pic of a V8 unit side by side with a 4 cyl one. You can see the bearing is a little bit longer(taller) than the V8 one(4cyl on the right, V8 on the left). The diameter of the shaft is the same on the inner, and I'll measure a 4 cyl race for you, but I believe the outside diameter to be the same as the V8. If I get a free minute this weekend, I will press that bearing off of a 4 cyl input and post up the numbers for you, and if I have more time I'll track down a local part number for that bearing too. Sorry I gave incorrect information, but I did track it down and corrected myself. Hope I can get all the info for you and put it out here for everyone.

Nothing wrong with being wrong as long as you share the correct information when you get it!

From looking at that pic, the bearing thickness looks different, where the v8 has shorter rollers. I would have thought it would be the other way around.

I read that the Spline is the same, but the shaft length is longer. I am looking to see if the V6 shaft can be trimmed to 4cyl dimensions and still engage the clutch disk.
