I adjusted the timing chain to tdc with the grey link on the line but after turning the motor over once maybe twice the link is not lined up again.. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

Normal, it takes something like 50 revolutions (don't quote that number, it's just a lot) before they actually line back up again because of the configuration of the chains.
