I had that same setup with 315/35's on the back and 275/40's on the front. They are the exact same height and much up great.

If you're up for doing a little easy math tire rack has a calculator that will give you total tire height so you can compare your fronts to your rears. I'd link it, but links failing me at this point in time.

Tires are measured in millimeters. To calculate tire wall height you multiple the width times the aspect ratio. A 245/45 tire has a 110.25mm (245x.45) height. A 275/40 has a 110.00mm (275x.40) height and a 315/35 has a 110.25mm (315x.35) height. From the side all three tires look exactly the same.

A 255/40 has a tire wall height of 102mm. If I interpeted your question correctly you seem to be asking if it would look weird to have a taller tire on the front than the back but the 255/40 isn't a taller tire. It's 7.5% shorter. It's only 102mm tall while the 315/35 is 110.25mm tall.

I have the same rims size and to me 245 in the front just looks a little off, the tires just look too small. I now have 275 and i like the way it looks and like the wider tire.

the stock 245/45/17 will fit a 9 inch rim also, and not change tire size height at all, since the 315/35/17 is the exact same height as stock as well.
