where do torque boxes go and what do they do?

i may be wrong but isnt it where the control arms mount to the body or subframe or watever

If you are referring to torque box re-enforcements (AKA "battle boxes"), they fit up into the boxed in area that is to the outside of the front mounting bolt for the lower control arms. The bolt goes through the bracket then the bracket bolts to the floor pan. This transfers the load on the front mount of the lower control arm over a larger area and helps prevent cracking and tearing out the stock bracket.
