Took my car to the tranny shop to have them change the 1-2 synchro and got some bad news. They said they can replace synchros for $500 but my first and second gear is bad. They want $1050 to fix that so I told them to just put it back together. Got to thinking and looked on Craigslist. Found a T-5 for $200 so I'm going to have them put that in instead of my bad one. Instead of spending the extra $750 (300 to put back together without fixing), that'll go towards my T-56 mag.

Yeah, nice trans shop you got there, since there is no such thing as 'synchros' they were blowing smoke up your skirt. There isn't a trans shop on earth that will repair a T5 for less than a grand, well besides me, but I'm not a 'trans shop'. I would have rebuilt that for 750 out the door and replaced all the blocker rings, second gear, third gear, 2/4 slider and 1/2 slider. All those parts make up the 'synchro' that's why i said they were bs'ing you. You have to replace the 1/2 slider and second gear to repair the trans if it's been grinding, as well as the blocker ring in first and second, which by themselves is 200 bucks. Hope this helps you and others contemplating a T5 repair.

I'm the one that asked for the synchros to be changed. They said they would replace those for 500 so I'm hoping they would have replaced everything associated with the synchros, aside from the gears. Picking up my new used tranny right now.

Nope, he replaced blocker rings for that money. There are three pieces to a synchronizer assembly. He replaced one, follow me? It only maskes the priblem when thats done. Any trans guy that knows manual trans will tell you replacing blocker rings will not fix it, just get you a few more miles before it starts popping out of gear or beimg hard to shift fast at higher rpms.

Found one for 400 that comes with belH and hurst shifter...neither of which I need. I may just put it together as is until I get the T-56. I guess no one has decent deals on them. This is about all I can find

You will love that trans, I had a viper spec, loved it but it had a 2.66 first gear, I would like the 2.97 better on a dd.

Meh.... to many gears. Astro T5. But on a serious note, you could sell off that bell and that shifter and recoupe money. People break bells all the time and need new ones. And the shifter is an easy sale as well.

If you are talking about how much a stock t5 can handle, I have no doubt in my mind that you will eventually break it at the track. I have a spare in my garage right now. When I break this one, I will put the spare in while my brother-in-law rebuilds this one with Astro parts. Astroperformance.com - Your Manual Drivetrain Specialist Not cheap, but no swap parts either, and lightweight while maintaing smooth shifting. Unless of course, I decide to go c4 which is entirely possible.

Well it's been in my car for some time now since that repair... About a year and a half or so.

I'd like to think my guy knows what he's going... He's bob hanlons suspension tuner, so he knows all about stick shift trannies.
