Will a new HU make much difference in SQ?

Hello,
Trying to help a Brother work out some ideas for his son's 2003 Mustang. We are not sure if its a Mach 460 or Mach 1000. Maybe this pic can help one of you tell us:

Besides finding out which system it is I am trying to determine how the stock head units disc transport system is and if a lot of processing is done in it. My Brother wants to remove and replace JUST the head unit with a DD like the Clarion CX609 or Pioneer FH-P8000BT. Sure my Nephew will get the added benefits of USB, Bluetooth, IPOD, etc. BUT will it sound any better if its just running a signal through the same amps and speakers? With the noise floor already being relatively high from road noise, engine noise how much difference is a direct deck swap gonna make in sound quality? I have seen in some case (not mustangs) where the SQ actually went to crap because the stock head unit did a lot of "BOSE LIKE" processing and be removing it, the stock speakers even with the stick amps sounded terrible.

Thoughts? Thanks!

yes you will get better SQ with an aftermarket HU. although im not sure that you will retain the stock amps. wraither will be able to chime in on that.

no on the clarion.
yes on the pioneer.

any reason you want to get a double din HU?

also an aftermarket HU will only sound better if its tuned and installed the right way. if you have things like bass boost, loudness, ect turned on it will sound horrible. it should be faded to the front speakers for a better soundstage, high pass filter set right or the bass will be muddy, ect
mx pretty much summed it up for me. He's like my little helper when im not around:)
As far as what system you have you would have to go into the back and tell us what you have. if you have sub enclosure on each side and then an amp rack with 4 amps on the floorboard on an amp rack then you have a mach 1000 if not then you just have a 460.
The system is set up like a processor but not on the same level as bose systems. You can integrate a mach system with any head unit just need the correct harness. Which is going to be the Metra 70-5519 harness that come with the correct secondary harness that allows for full operation and control of the stock sub woofers.

Sound quality will sound better (louder) as there will a little bit more power being sent to the speakers but not a whole lot. the built in sound processors in aftermarket units are alot better then those of factory radios. As far as sound quality you just need to mess around with the settings, as stated, until you reach a point that is satisfying to you. I generally fade to the front about 2 levels then play with the settings like bass, treble, etc.

If you want to tune your system for good sound go get yourself a michael jackson CD and tune it off of there. You may laugh but his music has the right amount sound equalization, just the right amount of highs, mids, and lows. Start at 0 on your settings and then play with them. turn off your loudness. I dont turn on the HPF unless ive got a 4 ch and then subs. I sometimes dont even do that as alot of people like the subs handling all the bass and the interior speakers handling all the highs. in a good system they should equalize out where everything is working together.

Once again the Mustang Wizard wraitherx comes to the rescue. Thanks for you help to mxnate116!!. Said it before and will say it again, something wrong with you guys. Been in this hobby for 20 years. Been on forums since usenet, prodigy then AOL and then the WWW with all the coming and going forums. YOU GUYS ARE TOO NICE! I am waiting for a knife in the back, lol. Seriously though, I am really impressed by the way you guys get stuff done. Other forums would have mocked me, ridiculed my car, gear selection, where I live and anything else they can get their hands on. I think you get the point.

I can pretty much guaranty its the MACH 460. Doesn't the deck on the Mach 1000 say Mach 1000 right on it or was that on just certain years. Got to remember that this is a pretty tame (but clean) 6 cylinder stang. I don't even thing the Mach 1000 was an option. The Zinc Yellow paint was which I like, lol.

Getting down to brass tacks here though.... Is a simple deck swap is going to make a difference worth doing. My Nephew is in Arts and Theater. He does a lot of musicals, plays piano and other instruments so he has a good ear. I know the noise floor with negate some differences anyway.

Basic question. Does this harness send hi level power to the amps? I was trying to understand why you said it would be louder. I am sure any name brand aftermarket unit would put out more watts RMS that a stock unit. I am so used to dealing with preouts that I almost forgot how hi level outputs work. Thank good for the harness.

The Bottom line is that I don't want to see them drop $300+ on a stereo and then turn it on and shrug there shoulders in disappointment. I am trying to get them to think ahead with ideas like 6 channel preamps for adding real amps later. They have the money and I wish they would just do it now. Heck I have a matching set of oldie but goodie Kicker ZR460 (4x30 severely underrated) and a matching DX 350 class d amp with birthsheet at 452 watts. Perfect match for that car. Bridge the 4 channel (2x90) to a good set of comps (JL, ARC, IMAGE, CDT) and find a 10" Image IDQ sub on sale, seal it up and throw 400 watts at it. The perfect Virgin system.

The metra harness taht he was talking about hooks in to the line out jacks on your a/m deck.

as far as the sound difference... I noticed a large difference for the better after installing my kenwood DD. mainly for the added adjustability. (Better eq than the stock 460 hardware...) just have to check out the adjustability of the h/u that you choose...

And taht looks like a 460 h/u --- (The mach 1000 has a mach button instead of the tel mute)

thats what im here for!

good call on the MJ CD ill try that out next time i do an install

and with the HPF, i guess if you dont have crap stock paper speakers then you dont need it. i have it on in my dads truck because they distort like crazy.

yeah bro, you will be amazed at the sound quality you will experience with the MJ cd when you start tweeking your system. Absolutely amazing.

In the case of stock paper speakers the yeah you may need it to stop the distortion or you can just simply turn the bass down either way will work. But with the mach system the speakers are a little better then normal and can handle a decent amount.
