cool i read a couple articles about the spline #s being different but i really dont know what the significance, if any, is.

Yea I this the truck 8.8 is 31 spline and ours is 28 but that do t matter cause your not changing that

No you do not have to change the front differential out it doesn't work that way with a 4 by 4.

Please explain. It would seem to me that both the front and rear would need the same gear ratio.

Apologies I have been working on military systems for far t long with a civilian setup you would have to transfer both sets of gears in order to have them match up. Rock crawlers and other systems I have seen sometimes take a different gear setting depending on terrain.

You will have to change the front gears or you will destroy your transfer case. If you put 4.10 in the rear the front will be geared 4.09 or something similar just slightly higher (numerically lower)than the rear gear.
Unless you plan to never use the 4x4 this needs to be done.

Ford racing makes the best gears out there hands down so stick with them.
