All I have is a ratchet with a very short extension or a wrench, the top bolt is the one that gives me problems
ne one have a trick to getting a starter out?

if you buy a swivel you can get it from the a arm thats what turning the wheel helps with

about 2 feet of extensions and a swivel....seriously, i put in my new mini starter and the top bolt was actually EASIER to get out...Go through the front like Darrell said.
