Hey guys, My friend is looking into building a 67 fastback Eleanor (his dad has quite a bit of money) from the ground up. Anyways, he is coming to me for advice cuz i'm pretty car knowledgeable. We have talked about his HP goals and stuff and he has decided on the Ford Racing 351W Ford Racing Performance Parts [M-6007-D351FT*]

Anyways, we are trying to find a transmission that would be reasonable behind this bad boy and that is fairly decent. We were looking at z-spec T-5's and i'm not sure that that t-5 will handle the torque that motor puts out. I was also looking at the tremic T-56 5 speed. Whats your opinion on that? it looks more sophisticated than T-5's but will it handle that motor? will it bolt up?

And just to make sure, the 5.0L bellhousings will work on 351W right? they are basically the same block with more bore and stroke.

no, complete frame off restoration. He us gonna use the 351W small block from ford racing. He wants to stay away from the big block. he wants decent gas mileage and such so that 351W is what he wants to go with. any suggestions??

Tremec makes very nice High Proformance Tranny's. I dunno about an old 67 but i know for a 5.0 ( and prob for the 67 ) it requires that you shorten the driveshaft though. Some one else will post here soon im sure and let you know.
But in my opinion if you have that nice of a car wit ha carb and a 351 you can plan on great gas mileage. But just remember when it comes to carbs ( for the most part ) Better gas mileage usually means you suffer on the HP end. If i was him i wouldnt worry about the gas mileage thing, i would make it a bad ass ride. Besides its not like he'll be driving it every day, right? But yeah think about it, hope that helps or gives ya something to talk about, best of luck!

true. but he wants to go small block. Anyone know where i can get a NICE performance 427 for around $7000? i can convince him if its in his budget. on that note, where would i get a manual transmission for a 427? gotta be able to handle that power as well...

well as far as my research goes, they put a 390 as the biggest block in a 67. How am I gonna stuff a big block in there? is it able to? Or am I just gonna have to get a small block stroked and bored to 427? he also wants reliability. he is spending over 30k he wants it to be just as good as a brand new car. It's not gonna be a trailer queen. he also wants to be able to put pump gas in it not racing fuel.. so no super high compression...

What do you think>?

Ok well 1st off how much HP is this guy planning on putting out?
Whats the price range for the....
1- Motor
2-Tranny

Also is he looking to build the Motor or buy a Crate Motor all ready to go?
well right now we are lookin around $10k for the motor and tranny and rear end rebuild. it needs to be ready to bolt in and go. it doesn't need to retarded fast, so maybe 370-450 hp? he doesn't know much about cars but his dad wants a project so the easier the better.

Let me put it this way, he is trying to convince his dad to do this 67 mustang rather than his dad buying a small airplane...

well in an ideal world, you could get a tranny from ford racing as well.
Ford Racing Performance Parts [M-7003-R58H*]
Ford Racing Performance Parts [M-7003-R58**]

I plan on getting the 600hp/torque version eventually. the 350hp/torque version might to ya good, but *shrug* if 10k is your limit after shipping you might be a hair over that.
Where would i find a bellhousing for that to bolt up to a 427 or 351W? i'm not sure i could put it on a big block. also, what should I do about the driveshaft?

you know that the 390 is also an FE engine which means it is a big block, right? you wont have any problems with a big block 427FE. i would personally just find a 351W in a junkyard and bore and stroke it to a 408 and put a nice set of heads on it and a mean cam and push 600+ hp. as far as transmissions go, send a PM to Droppedbass87. he will hook you up.

Here you go,
If your ever going to convince someone to do somthing like a ground up build with someone else's tab your going to have to make it "sound" like an investment.
Your best bet is to make it as close to the original. Or even exact. '67 was the first gt500. '66 was the first year of the gt350.
Howstuffworks "1967 Shelby GT 500: A Profile of a Muscle Car"
the engine it came with is 428 "cobra jet" Big Block
"clones" of eleanor using a '67 gt chassis go for over $100,000

btw.... you can't bore a SB to 428 safely.

the only problem with that is that he doesn't want to do machining with blocks and stuff. He wants to buy a crate motor and drop it in brand new. An engine with a warranty is also something really appealing to him. Like i said, he doesn't know much about cars. He doesn't want to deal with building a motor himself.

just throwin this out there blueprint engines has a really nice 408 stroker for $400 less than the ford racing 351 and has more power.

Blueprint Engines.com: Custom Crate Motors - Stroker Engines - Stroker Motors

the dyno graph is at the bottom of the page. 425 hp and 455 ft-lb

as for the tranny i would check out Modern Driveline - T5 / TREMEC TKO Transmission Conversion - Swap your Ford Mustang, Falcon, Cobra, Hotrod into Overdrive! Performance Parts send them an email or call them, they are very knowledgeable on putting newer style trannys in the older mustangs and sell complete kits as well.
