Photobucket used to offer free hosting, but in July they changed their policy and now require you to pay $399/year for hosting. They are effectively holding everyone's photos hostage. I have seen so many threads–ones that contained photos you couldn't find anywhere else–ruined because of Photobucket.

There are still a few sites that offer free hosting, however, such as Imgur and Flickr.

Wow, that is a major set back!!! There is nothing like a photo to confirm the text! At least I am not going crazy as I swore I had been able to view them before I joined the forum. Do you know if the forum is considering paying the fee to unlock the photos? I would be happy to sign up for the premium membership if it included the access.

there's nothing that can be done on the forum's end. it's the individual uploaders who would each have to pay the photobucket fees to post their own photos here

not only did photobucket destroy their own business with this requirement, they also destroyed huge swaths of the internet

Huh, I was hoping from what mg2v said that the forum could pay the hosting fee. All those guys that graciously posted tutorials aren't going to want to pay to do that whereas as a group with annual fees the $399 sounds doable.

Nobody is going to want to pay that because it's not realistic. Even if the forum paid the fee (which I don't expect it to) that's only for ONE account. That doesn't resolve the issue as people have their pictures posted on their own individual accounts. To be fair, it's not really the forum's responsibility. The forum already allows you to attach images and files to your posts, which is effectively hosted on the site's bandwidth at no charge to forum users.

Also, by agreeing to pay the ridiculous fee they're asking, you're effectively supporting their decision. I, for one, am not against them requiring money for providing image hosting. Bandwidth isn't free. I am, however, totally against the ridiculous amount.

Now that I understand its a per person fee and not just one fee for the whole forum I totally agree. It sounds like a fee for a business rather than some private individual that just wants to share photos with friends.

I just opened a Imgur account. This is a test to see if it works. The picture was taken just after I added a heat extracting Cervini '95 Cobra hood and moved the rear wing back two inches. That got the rear wing out of the middle of the trunk. After it was moved back I think it was one of the better cosmetic mods. I'm also running 13" Cobra brakes in the front. The discs have since been replaced with slotted drilled ones. In the picture I'm still running the stock starfish wheels. They are sitting behind the shed. I'm now running SVE 10th anniversary wheels. You can see them in my garage (if the Photobucket pictures are still working).

While this sucks, who cares? Photobucket sucks pretty hard. Their site was slow as all hell every time I tried to use it and it was semi hard to navigate. No skin off my back, I'll just use another site, they can kiss my ass for that much money.
you're kind of missing the whole point. even people who have never used photobucket (like myself) are affected by this. it doesn't just affect the account holders, it affects the whole internet. i can't even search something on google images without getting the photobucket 3rd party messages. as has been mentioned already, it's killed a lot of tech threads, not just on MM or even car related things, but every industry has been hit.

i was wondering what all the third party BS was about. basically every tech or how-to thread you visit is now useless. glad i ditched PB a couple years ago...

No I get that. But it's not the end of the world. There is so much info out there now we'll figure it out. Plus dare I say it, we still have umm what are those things? Books? lol

Yeah but so much info that was shared where the picture made all the difference. How many people will redo all that work unless photos reload from another source without too much hassle (I doubt it). Books are great, but trust me (I have way too many) a forum with shared info can be a whole lot better and up to date. Plus sooo many sources to compare...

Earlier tonight, completely randomly, for probably the first time in a couple years, I hopped on my old Stangnet account (man were those some good times back in the day!).

Anyway, I noticed that all of my Photobucket pictures were linking up perfectly over there. On top of that, it seemed everyone's were working just fine. Didn't see a single one of those "3rd party blah blah blah" images.

Any idea on why it's working on that forum and not others?

I know this is an old thread, but if you didn't know you can download your pics from Photobucket to your hardrive on your lap top or PC I even think to your hand held device. I downloaded all my pics from Photobucket to my laptop. Also left them in Photobucket just in case my laptop takes dump.
