So my friends wife just baught him a Mach 1 for a "Welcome back" present from Iraq. Its got a vortech and a couple of other supporting mods with full bolt ons. She wants it so that when he gets home in the next week that he has everything that he wants. She's looking into the Livewire for him but she wants me to make sure everything will work. My question is this... with all the work that was done to it Im assuming that if it was done right it was tuned (hopefully... she didnt call me when buying and looking at the car) so if someone used a handheld like the another SCT or something else I know that they are pretty much married to the ECU, is there anyway around this? If so what does it consist of? That way I can tell her what to do cause she doesnt want anyone touching his car except for him and she is willing to pay to have everything professionally done, which I told her that I could do for free:D preciate the help guys.

yeah that what I thought. So if I take it to a tuner they should be able to take the tune off so that he can pair up a new tuner. Right??

I might not be the best to ask since I dont own a tuner....

But I believe you are confused about the marrying concept.

Its the tuner device itself refusing to work with another vehicles ECU.
It doesnt lock your car from having another tuner.

Just their way of charging $300+ for you to have no rights over your own hardware. Similar to buying copy protected music.

If I own 2 mustangs my single tuner had better work for both because its MINE. Just because it *could* be used for other cars doesnt mean they get to trump Fair Use laws.

Would you buy a car if the hood was welded shut? What business do they have imposing their restrictions on something you buy and own? Unlike software they cant just say you are paying to "lease" it. That loophole doesnt work so well for real life tangible things.

Lets sell cars requiring thumb print verification to drive..... Dont want more than one person driving the same car now do we? Thank god most other inventions didnt give the creator these powers over us.

Dont you love when other people dictate your rights :)

I see you are in VA Beach, I would try calling DTP and asking them since they are a SCT dealer. I was under the impression that if your car has a tune on it from a handheld tuner, that it had to be removed by the device married to the car or the pcm to be reflashed by the dealer. I could be wrong, it's just what I heard.

This is wrong. A handheld tuner is vin locked to that particular vehicle and will only work with the vehicle it is vin locked to. You have two vehicle you need two tuners.

I dont think you followed me.

Yes its vin locked to the vehicles ECU. I know that.

I'm complaining that it SHOULD work for 2 cars because I just paid them $300+ dollars and whatever happened to fair use?

You know like having unrestricted use of hardware you purchased?

Did you miss the entire rant you quoted?

I hear you, and think they should work on 2 cars. The problem is that if they did, everybody would just go in with their friends and SCT would only get 1/2 the sales. I think they should have a $100 option to be able to use the tuner on 2 cars if you own both of them.

I got you it didn't look like a rant to me. I agree that you should be able to use for other cars, but I see both sides of it.

But what makes their business model so special that they get to place restrictions on how you use something to increase sales? You know there was once a business where ICE was delivered to homes before refrigerators? They tried outlawing ice makers to save their failing business model just like the music labels are crying about piracy now. It didnt work, but feel free to research.

If it costs so much it should be free to do as you please. If they think locking it down is the right way to alienate their customers then it should be $100 or less. Luckily anyone can come use my hand tools because they work however I want since I own them. Anyone can drive my car, anyone can use my microwave, anyone can watch my tv..... but no only I can use my tuner on one of my cars. And they want me to pay $300 for the privilege?

Any business model really could make more money by being jerks like that. They just dont get to since many products arent computerized enough to do so. Being an open source programmer in the IT field taught me that open tools free to the will of their owner tend to survive the test of time.

Business models enforced via software restrictions go away once their secret is out. Just like leading by force, as soon as you aren't the strongest you will get your ass beheaded.

Its more of a philisophical debate rather than specifically targeting these handheld tuners....

Just makes me want to reverse engineer them and anonymously and publicly post workarounds with a nice F-You letter.

We have these laws called Fair Use.... Is what they're doing even legal?

There are other tuning options that allow multiple cars (sniper), but if you want the best you have to pay the price. There are some tuning options that are cheaper, and can be used on as many cars as you like, but they are WAY inferior to SCT products as far as the parameters go. When it comes to making serious power, nothing is cheap. You gotta pay to play. (and its more like $400:D) Some dyno tuners charge close to $1000 for 1 tune on 1 car. Its a lot of work to make tunes, and develop these products. MS windows is a perfect example. I should be able to use it on all my computers if i pay the man, but no, i can only use it on one. Why, because they make the best (or most convenient for the price) product anc can do what they want, and people will still pay for it.
