Thats what so confusing the part # for the older steel cobra crank is the same...
But mine is 6 bolt...
Rebuilding the Ford 4.6L SOHC Engine, Doug Anderson, Engine Builder, April 2002
look at the crank section...

I am well aware of that write-up, every 6 bolt crank I have ever seen has been a cast crank. I am not saying that you won't find a 6 bolt forged, but of the hundreds I have seen they all were cast pieces. The only forged cranks I am aware of were used in the Cobra and all had 8 bolts. There is a possiblility that it is a forged 6 bolt crank. Without seeing it makes it a hard guessyou can tell the difference when you look at the 2 side by side.

Looking at the picture it appears to be cast, it is hard to see without having them side by side. Every article I have read other than that one says they had a cast crank. The rule of thumb has always been 6 bolts = cast. The mark 8's were not a very big power maker those years, I highly doubt Ford would have used a steel crank in a low powered engine.

yea its cast. If you are rebuilding it the cast will handle plenty. Just get it balanced. The only hicup in the 6-8 bolt rule is some of the cast cranks are 8 bolt as well.
