I searched through a bunch of old threads but Im still not sure the best route for me. My motor blew and Im replacing the motor. Im doin this in my driveway and dont need to remove the tranny for anythin. How hard is it to get to the bolts mounting the tranny to the engine? Is it easier to just remove the engine and tranny together or should I unbolt it and just pull the engine?
Pulling the motor, need some advice.

my machinist will do a flywheel for me as long as i give him a little notice. if i tell him the day i will be heading over there to have it done, he will just do it when i get there. i just drop the trans out when i do a clutch, i have had mine out so many times i know each set and each tool i use. its a little more of a pain with long tubes and a stock k, especially on a 4v car. i have a tubular k on mine, and havent had to pull just the trans out of the mach as of yet.

put car on ramp on the rear tires and frame on stand on front of car
remove:
d/s from diff (i leave in on the tran side)
exhaust mid pipe
hood (in put blanket on top of car and lay hood on top)
raidator hoses
serpentine belt
top end (air filter to manifold)
ac compressor, p/s pump, and alt
wire harness
front tires
steering arm from rack to steering wheel
struts
calipers (tie up to car)
p/s lines to the rack and pinion
hook motor to cherry picker
put jack under trans
unbolt the 8 bolts for k-member
unbolt trans x-member
lower together
once lowered:
remove:
starter
hearders (if running long tubes)
un bolt motor mounts off k-member
take trans bolts out
slide trans off
jack motor up enough to clear k
pull k-member out
then lift motor strait out of the top.
thats what the steps i take if i can rember it all step by step. i just threw this list together really quick.

Do you go over the top of the motor of do you let the transmission sag to get the top bellhousing bolts? Those bolts were always the biggest pain in the ass for me.

i drop the back end of the trans enought to see the top bolts. i use swivel socket and bunch of extensions to get the top ones out.
Sweet that's what I've been doing. Does this put any amount of bad stress on the motor mounts by any chance? Sorry to kinda hijack your thread man.

yeah, but wont hurt if you dont do it all the time. i need to change mine, but i have had my trans out almost 20 times and of course i thrash the piss out of mine.
Gotcha. Thanks man. What do you torque your pressure plate down to? I'm going to do this one down to a T. I NEVER want to take this ****ing transmission down again.

dont know, i cant remember. thankfully its been a while since i have had to mess with it.
25 ft lb ring a bell perhaps? I'm thinking about just taking a 1/2'' ratchet and getting it as tight as possible without risking damage to the bolts...

get them tight. dont put a super hero torque on them, you will strip the threads.
Kinda what I meant to say :lol
Only thing that needs super hero torque is those damn pinion bolts. 85 ft bls ftl

getting them out is a PITA!!!
NOT AT ALL bro.
Do this next time. Get an open end box end wrench. Put it on there at a 45 deg angle go to the passenger side and put you foot against it. Now kick. Take out that bolt, turn DS, repeat.
SO easy. I can get the DS off in 5 minutes.
