I have a 1994 5.0 Mustang. I am changing the five speed transmission to an automatic transmission. I need to know if the cross member that is stock with the five speed transmission will work with the automatic I am getting ready to put in. Is there anything else that I will need to change on the car.

if you are going with an auto to race, that isnt all you will need...you will need a nice stall and a shift kit/ valve body to keep up with those 5 speeds...Now if you are going with an auto just to go auto, good luck man.

I am not worried about speed all that much, I mean I am 20 so it does mean a little bit to me. But My t5 is going out, already no 2nd gear. And I found a 89 gt with an Auto for $300 dollars with no title and runs great. So the way I see it, it would be cheaper to pick that up and change out transmissions rather than buy a rebuild kit and have my t5 rebuilt. But thats just my case, the other guys might be different.

Well you have some converting from hell to do... Just get a rebuilt T5 or one from Ford Racing man. I know you want it here and now but take the time my friend. You can save your self in the longrun

I would just get it rebuilt...who would put in the auto for you? That will cost some money. Might be cheaper to just rebuild but in the long run it is up to you man....I am just throwing some hints out at you.

Nope my friend, it's not a take 5sp and add auto and start driving, you have addition cables, you must get another harnessfor the auto so the thing can shift, you must apply some sort of cable to your auto tranny so when you hit your brakes, the thing won't continue to rev or "Push against the brakes", or more to say revs until the damn thing pops your block.

So get another 5sp or rebuilt it. Tranny shops to it cheap no a days. Just stay out of walmart sorta speak, and stay away from pep boys. Just go to a local shop or find a good friend that KNOWS trannys... Not knows about... KNOWS how to work on them, and you'll be set.

Oh thanks. I have a few friends that have told me they can do it. I thought that the other car with the auto already, would have all the cables and harnesses I would need on it. But the way it sounds, I will just rebuild then. Thanks again. Good luck again to the original poster of this.

5 speed to automatic swap !

Thank you for all of your input. There is nothing wrong with the 5 speed I have in the car right now. One of the reasons I am putting a automatic in my 5.0 is because I have a Art Car C4 with a brake, stall, and Cheeta Shifter that I purchased with the automatic transmission. Second, off the line, I will be fast with this automatic. I am running the quarter mile. I still would like to know if the cross member will work converting my 5.0 from 5 speed to automatic?

To be honest, why in the world would you go from 5sp to Auto. Save the gas man
Maybe he plans on doing alot of drag racing. Or maybe he wants reliability which is something you will never get from a T5.

For reference, don't think going automatic will make you faster, 5sp drivers can shift just as fast a an auto... well I can
I'll guarantee you can't shift as fast as a good automatic unless you have a Lenco.

WTF????

Swapping from a 5 speed to automatic is easy. Going from an automatic to a 5 speed is a bit more challenging.
