wheel hop (easily fixable) need a cover brace for big #'s. other then that not too much really. if you get one get one out of an 03-04 termi as they are 31 spline.

It excels where a solid rear axle fails. Solid rear axles are better for straight line performance.

thats an image of the IRS in a Mustang. Look at that compared to what all the other Mustangs have. There is more room for movement there. Each side is moving independently on it's own so it's less weight for each side, and doesn't have the leverage like a SRA would have. Less weight with power means it's going to lift and hop more than it would if it was all solid.

If I'm wrong on any of that please correct me.

Handles better is arguable, lol.

There are threads upon threads debating this.

In short, stock 4-link SRA < modded 4-link SRA < stock IRS < modded IRS < custom 3-link SRA when it comes to handling.

IN GENERAL, IRS handles better than a beam axle.

IRS is also considerably heavier, though you generally see a reduction of unsprung weight.

Basically here's the main thing to remember...If you want a strong rear for the drag strip go w/ SRA. Yes, you can use the IRS for the strip and yes it can be built to handle power, but it's not cheap.

If you're into Auto X / Roadracing like me then keep your IRS. The IRS kicks ass on twisties :)

Meh.

If you're a HARDCORE drag racer, you want the SRA.
If you're a HARDCORE corner carver, you want a custom 3-link SRA.

If you're neither of the above, build whatever you have currently.

I put an SRA in mine with the usual mods cause I'm a drag racer.

and what can i expect to score an irs for?
Dirt cheap. I usually see complete units for $300 or less, '99s will be cheaper, '03-'04 will be a little more.

Again, though, there's no reason to switch to the IRS. If you're into handling OR drag racing, you'll want the straight axle in the end.

+1 look what all the winning teams use. MOST if not all are using SRA.

Mustangs IRS is a hack designed to fit a chassis which wasnt built for it. Any solid that removes the upper control arms will be a good improvement.

Bullitt ak, would you be interested in a sell/trade for my IRS and for your SRA? Because when you do the swap you will need to change your exhaust, springs and struts/shocks. I would be willing to do a complete swap. I know you live in another state. We could set up a paypal transaction and "sell"(trade) each other. Pay for our own shipping. Hey Its an Idea?

Hey guys, I am new to this site but not to the mustang mod scene. I used to autocross my 95 GT and did the typical chassis mods, brakes, springs, control arms, busings.. etc. In the end it was becoming too much of a race car and not as much fun on the road so I built a 89 notch for race. I run in the Street Modified class and with the sold rear I ended up Street Mod champ 2008 and will probably win it for 2009. I too have contemplated swaping in a Tbird irs but in the end I dont think its worth the time. I have played around with chassis set up on the car allot and found the four link with panhard rod to be very effective. My car weighs (full interior) 2800#'s versus 3400 in my 95. So far only a hand full of C5 and C6 have squeeked by me (not in the same class) and the have to run full race tires to do so. So, to make your fox handle, no need for an IRS in my opinion.
