I have a fond disagreement with people who say that slowing down without using the brakes is bad because it doesnt tell other people you are slowing down mainly because my brake lights should not tell people when they need to slow down, the distance between my car and their car should. Brake lights should NOT be the indicator to slow down, a good driver knows this, thats why I never watch brake lights, I watch distances.
Yeah...thats the problem...There's many people on the roads who arn't good enough drivers to know your supposed to read distance and preform actions off the judgement. I've seen it happen many times where someone is rearended because their brake lights weren't on when they were stopped/slowing down

The new 370 Z's come with a speed sync option that will match engin RPM with gear selection while downshifting. I wouldnt be suprised if we see it soon enough in the mustangs.

i had a friend try to downshift from 5th to 3rd while going about 70 on the interstate. he accidentally put it in 2nd, his car flipped and rolled off the road. he was fine but his car was totaled. just be careful.

also, people usually downshift when going down mountains so they dont kill the breaks...

considering how it is the most homosexual thing since the wheel, i hope we dont see it in mustangs.

It seems easier to do it with the heel on the brake and toe on the throttle for me. Though im sure there is some reason you are not suppose to do it like that.
i think the reason primarily is you're trying to slow down and most people use their toe on the brake to slow down? just in case you already downshifted and still needed to be on the brake your tow is already on it. i could be wrong. . . probably am, but thats how i see it logically.

3rd is next to 5th up top how did he go down to second? thats pretty incredible... poor bastard.

Why because it's convenient? I dont see anything wrong with having something like that. If anything what it does is make the 2000$ for the auto less attractive because all of the worry about damaging clutches and what not is slightly reduced because of that tech. I wouldnt mind it. I also wouldnt mind the ability to just let out on the clutch on level terrain and have my car go forward without stalling the frak out, and it'd be a simple reprogramming of the computer and not that hard to do.

Personally, if it gets people away from the idea that manuals are a PITA to drive, it is a bonus to me :)

Yup, things that my kids will learn prim and proper before they go driving... drives me crazy when people watch brake lights because one person who taps his brakes for whatever godforsaken reason gets an entire line of people to STOMP on their brakes because they see brake lights... very frustrating...

<<< still has 50% brake pad left with 117k on clock all thanks to downshiftting correctly...

my dad showed me how to do it when he taught me how to drive this car...its second nature...all in one motion push in clutch, tap gas while changing gears let clutch out... never over 4k rev's...unless im downshifting to get on someone :lol

Well you are suppose to use your toes becuase its more sensitive and you can be more precise. But, on our car there is nothing precise about neither the throttle, nor the brakes.

I would put out on this proper driving discussion that you are not suppose to be looking at the car in front of you at all either to judge distance or watch brake lights.

First of all, how is the wheel homosexual? Second, I like the little luxuries in life, especially if it makes my life easyier. Third, The 350Z's got the chick car persona and the the new 370Z's did a great job getting rid of that. Im sure the 370's will suprise you, especially if you race one.

If downshifting was bad for your car in any way, shape, or form, not only would the dealer tell you not to do it, but even automatics wouldn't have the capability of downshifting.

There is nothing in the owner's manual about not downshifting- only that you should not downshift to 1st gear above 15 mph. There is nothing in the manual about advanced engine wear, clutch wear, or TOB wear from downshifting.

Both automatic and manual transmissions are designed to upshift AND downshift. If it was bad for the car to downshift, don't you think the dealer would tell you not to do so? Or prevent you from having the ability to do so?

Just as in with any other operation of any of the vehicle's systems, there is NO DETRIMENT to anything from downshifting, unless you do it wrong.

You can blow up speakers if you abuse a stereo. You can blow up your engine if you abuse or over-rev it. You can have your brakes fail prematurely if you ride them or use them incorrectly. You can burn out your clutch if you use it improperly, such as to hold the car on a hill. You can damage front end components if you are so dense you can't avoid potholes or if you drive over a parking curb. You can bust your microwave if you use that wrong too.

Final word: Downshifting is NOT detrimental to the engine, the clutch, or the transmission-

WHEN DONE CORRECTLY.

That is all.
