Don't own a Mustang YET... but have wanted one since I was very young. My older brother had a 1979 Mustang Pace Car that he bought in 81? I LOVED that car when I was a little squirt. Ever since then I wanted a Mustang, but I either couldn't afford one, or couldn't afford the insurance.
In about a year I'll be able to get one, and I am trying to learn all I can about them in that period of time. Of course forums are usually the best place to learn about cars I've come to find out.
I am 36 years old, and I have decided after having mostly 4cyl FWD cars that I want.. er no NEEDED a RWD 8cyl 5sp. Having said that, all my cars have been MTX, I don't like automatics. I was more concerned with gas intake etc. But I wanna have some fun.
The newer mustangs are hot, I love them! But I REALLY REALLY REALLY like the ones they made before the newest body style. I like what Ford calls the "New Edge" styling that they gave the Mustang in 99. So I am probably looking for a 99-2004 Model. Probably in Black, White, Grey/Silver/Pewter or that dark midnight blue. I want just your basic 5spd 8cyl GT. Shouldn't be too hard to find. I may put a new computer, and a Cold Air Intake in it, but that's about it. Going from a 99 Neon R/T to a Mustang GT will be enough of a power boost for me
(Having said that, the R/T is peppy.. I used to messs around "street' racing when I was younger. I beat a few 8cyl automatic mustangs from the 80s. But then again it was probably driver error on their part) I am not really planning on racing it on the street. I am too old and wise for such a thing now. I like the sound a cold air intake gives a 8cyl. Lets it really breath. PLUS you get better gas mileage.
ANYHOW, is there any "buyer beware" or things I need to worry about when it comes to buying a used Mustang from that period?
I don't want any "Buy a newer model, they are soo coolll" posts please. A 2005 Mustang can cost almost 10k more than a 2004 model. I am not looking for a showroom car, I just want a not real expensive 8cyl 5spd RWD toy before I get too old and people start calling it a mid-life-crises. I came here cause I don't want the Chevrolet/Dodge/etc zealots making the Found on road dead comments.
For example before, buying my R/T I found out that they had head gasket problems. To watch out for that. So after 5 months of having the car, my head gasket went. Knowing it was a factory flaw, I got it fixed and repaired and Chrysler paid 90% of the bill. Had I not came on the intertubes and found that out, I would have been stuck with a large bill.
Feel free to enter in any comments or opinions for a 1st time soon to be Mustang owner.
Thanks.
