Just have a bunch of questions that i would like some help with.
1. I see all this talk about bottom end and top end of an engine. What exactly comprises the top end or bottom end?
2. What is a timing chain for?
3. Whats the difference between a pushrod engine and a modular engine?
4. What is an overhead cam for?

I think thats all i have for now. any help is great! :D
 
1. The bottom end is the rotating assembly, pistons, rods, crank. Top end is the intake manifold, heads, cams, valves, ect...

2. A timing chain links the cams to the cranks rotation so the intake and exhaust valves open in sequence to match the stroke of the pistons.

3. A pushrod motor uses a single cam shaft mounted in the center of the engine that uses steel rods to open and close the intake and exhaust valves which are inside the heads.

4. An OHC motor is just a different design of motor. The cams are in the heads driven by the timing chains instead of one cam in the center of the engine using push rods to open and close the valves.

so our engines have 3 cams? the two on each side an one overhead, or am i wrong on this.

No, they have 2 cams in the heads (one in each head). That's why they are SOHC (single over head cam) engines.

Pushrod engines have one cam in the block with 8 sets of lobes (I use this put as basic as possible). Each set of lobes controls the intake and exhaust valves for each cylinder. As the lobes turn they push on a rod that runs up to the heads. The other end of the rod pushes on the valves to open it.
The OHC engine has a cam in each head. Each cam has 4 sets of lobes for the 4 intake and exhaust valves in each head. These lobes push directly on the valves as they rotate.

ohhh ok its starting to make sense. so pushrods have just the one cam in the center?

so then if theres intake and exhaust valves, why do we have 3? is that to make it 2 intake one exhaust per cylinder or the other way around?

I probably sound completely retarded to you guys but thanks! Im getting the gist of it.

do we have port fuel injection or direct fuel injection?

Direct injection is something Ford hasn't gotten to yet. There are some hopeful of seeing it turn up in the coyote, but even that probably won't have direct injection.

I don't know if there are 2 intake, 1 exhaust valves or 1 intake, 2 exhaust valves per cylinder, maybe someone in here can help out on this.
