Luke, here's the fast way of finding a front or back focus problem. Since your D40 can't micro adjust the lens you would have to send it in anyway so I won't elaborate on the adjustments, well because you can't do anything.

I'm attaching a couple pics from invisicord. It's a very simple idea that nets very accurate results.

Essentially you put your focus point on a line you chose and snap a shot, view on PC. If the line you chose is blurry and the line in front of or behind your focal point is sharp. Then the lens is out of adjustment.

well they look really good. Im suprised the D40 can do that well indoors, mine don't look like that haha. So what was your lighting setup then? You have no noise at all in your pictures. Were you just using a really good lens?
Like Erin said, the tripod is the reason. No lighting setup was used. I just placed everything next to an east facing window to catch the morning light. The lens is just an entry level Tamron. I paid under $120 shipped off of ebay for it NIB. MSRP was around $280 when the lens was new, but now you can pick them up for only $165 from B&H.

Thank you Erin. I will print and see what I come up with.

Great pics beerhunter! Sorry I didn't catch you or the car at the StangNation anniversary cruise on Sunday... got there kind of late. Whereabouts do you go around here for concerts? I've never been to B.C. for concerts, usually stay around the Seattle area....

Moar pics....
